Static IP Address for a Zyxel Prestige 660 Series Problem.

Hey everyone,

I am trying to establish a static ip address and so far I have come unstuck because the router I am on claims that I need to have an alternate DNS Server. But having gone through all the motions with command, ipconfig /all etc. I have found that I don't have one. It just states one. Does anyone know how I can get a static ip address without it or if I can find it out for myself.

WINDOWS XP -Operating System
WIRELESS USB ADAPTOR - Internet Connection

If you want a screenshot or anything else, I will be happy to supply them.

Thanks for your time.

This could help...

Not sure if a wireless usb adapter differs much from a built-in or wireless nic.

You do not need multiple DNS servers. Normally, a broadband router's DHCP server points to it's base address as the only DNS server, and it forwards the requests to the ISP DNS server(s).

If you told us EXACTLY how you got this impression, and the make/model of the router and modem, it would help.

Re: Static IP Address for a Zyxel Prestige 660 Series Problem.

Thanks for the link. I followed it, but it claims I need an alternate dns server number. I have copied the information I get from ipconif /all to show you my network and more details. As you can see I don't have an alternate dns server to secure the static ip address.

Re: Static IP Address for a Zyxel Prestige 660 Series Problem.

If you want a static IP then set it on the workstation
Make sure NAT is turned on
The DNS will be correct as 192.168.1.1 - the ZyXel witll handle DNS

I haven't used this model but if it's like a Zywall then you will set the WAN parameters (ISPs DNS etc), turn on NAT, use DHCP (or static in your case)
Gateway and DNS will be 192.168.1.1

EDIT
after reading your post above I reckon that you need to manually add your ISP to your router - may be set to auto atm
Also make sure MAC address filtering isn't stopping you connecting

How do I manually add an ISP to my router? Thanks for the reply btw.

Re: Static IP Address for a Zyxel Prestige 660 Series Problem.

On the Zywall the IP, DNS etc should be set - either automatically from ISp or manually entered - have a look at any WAN settings.
I'll try and find a manual for your router.....

Re: Static IP Address for a Zyxel Prestige 660 Series Problem.

Found this site - http://nl.wiki.edpnet.be/index.php/Z...estige_660R-6x
Goto WAN under Advanced and see if there are DNS options there

The router should do all the legwork for DNS, that's why your worstations DNS is set to it's IP address. So the router should have your ISPs DNS set (or pick it up manually)

What is the exact problem btw - the static IP on a workstation or DNS resolution?

Thanks for the link. But the problem is that I can not login into my router to change my static address that way because I don't have static ip address. That is what I am trying to get but, it tells me that I need to type an alternate dns server number but as you can see I can not find out that number or know how I would, in order to find this number to secure a static ip address.

I found this site from a google search.

Re: Static IP Address for a Zyxel Prestige 660 Series Problem.

Have you tried hardwiring your computer to the the Zyxel and logging in? Both my dsl and router have a link named "status" that gives me dns#1/#2, ip, and other information. Perhaps your second DNS is there?

By hardwiring do you mean wiring it up woth the ethernet cable? Because that is not possible it simply won't stretch that far.

Re: Static IP Address for a Zyxel Prestige 660 Series Problem.

Did your wireless connection work prior to setting up a static ip?

If so, my thoughts are to change it back to dynamic setup to log into your Zyxel and hopefully retrieve DNS#1/#2... Worth a shot.

Re: Static IP Address for a Zyxel Prestige 660 Series Problem.

A alternate DNS isn't required in general....set the 2nd one to anything though...
eg. DNS1 = 192.168.1.1 DNS2 = 192.168.1.123

Re: Static IP Address for a Zyxel Prestige 660 Series Problem.

I just tried setting it to a random number just changed the last number and it wouldn't let me open my browser. So I just reset that. And now my browser works.

Jaxo yeah it does it has a new ip address evertime I connect. But, I can not login into my router because I don't have an ip address

Thanks for the help everyone.

Re: Static IP Address for a Zyxel Prestige 660 Series Problem.

Did you leave DNS1 as your router? DNS as another IP?
You won't need DNS to login to the router!! When you say the browser wouldn't open, do you mean it sat trying to resolve a web page (eg. google.com)?
