Internet connection drops out after 5 mins
Problem:
Internet eg downloading, msn works perfect for around 5 mins and then all of a sudden after 5mins nothing works ie browser will not load, msn cuts off. When I was downloading morzilla earlier, it almost finished downloading with 30secs to go and then all of a sudden it just hanged there and just stopped downloading. After 5 mins, when I open IE6, I get "connecting to site 66.249.91.104" on the bottom right of the browser. Then it will say webpage/server unavailable. Please note Tetonbob from the malware section of this site has kindly helped me remove malware from my computer and said it is free of malware and has recommended I go to the network area to resolve this problem. I never had this problem before the malware infection. I will appreciate any help. Many thanks!!! Fong |

Re: Internet connection drops out after 5 mins
Please supply the following info, exact make and models of the equipment please.
What country are you located in. Name of your ISP (Internet Service Provider). Make and exact model of the broadband modem. Make and exact model of the router (if a separate unit). Model numbers can usually be obtained from the label on the device. Connection type, wired or wireless. If wireless, encryption used, (none, WEP, WPA, or WPA2) Make and model of your computer. Version and patch level of Windows on all affected machines, i.e. XP-Home (or XP-Pro), SP1-SP2, Vista, etc. The Internet Browser in use, IE, Firefox, Opera, etc. Also, please give an exact description of your problem symptoms, including the exact text of any error messages. On any affected computer, I'd also like to see this: Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt: Type the following commands: PING 216.109.112.135 PING yahoo.com NBTSTAT -n IPCONFIG /ALL Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter. Paste the results in a message here. If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Re: Internet connection drops out after 5 mins
Many thanks for the replies! I do understand this is voluntary work for you guys so thanks a lot, heres my details:
I am located in UK (England) ISP: Supanet I am using a wireless LAN ADSL2 Broadband router Model no: AR-7064g+A (this is the only thing I can see that looks like a model no) connection: wired via cat 5e cable PC: unfortunately, my PC was build by friend so got no model number :( only thing I can tell you is that its got "Dell" on it so dunno if that is any help?! I am using XP PRO SP2 I am using IE6 and I managed to download Morzilla but neither works after 5 mins The symtoms are that internet, downloading and msn will not work after around 5 mins. I ping 127.0.0.1 but I get healthy response. Also, in the system tray, there use to be zone alarm, and daemon tools but now the icons have disappear from system tray and when I attempt to open zone alarm manually I get the error: "validation failed for c:program files\zone labs\zonealarm\zlclient.exe". I also attempted to re-install daemon tools and it looked like it had successfully re-installed but I restart computer and open IE6 and it links direct to a daemon tools page. Furthermore, daemon tools didn't work after the re-install! Please note that my bro's are using wireless with no problems at all and there is also a laptop connected to this router and internet is working fine on it. The problematic computer cannot browse the net when I do what you said in the command line interface even: Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600] (C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp. Re: Internet connection drops out after 5 mins
TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows XP with SP2.
Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt: Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ip reset reset.log Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog Reboot the machine. Also, you have DHCP disabled, so I suspect that may be an issue. Enable DHCP and see if that gets a better response. Select Start > Settings > Network Connections.

Re: Internet connection drops out after 5 mins
Let's see the IPCONFIG /ALL after the network is disconnected.

Re: Internet connection drops out after 5 mins
Looks like it might be a hardware issue. I'd try a new port on the router, a new cable, and if that doesn't do it, a new Ethernet NIC.

Re: Internet connection drops out after 5 mins
Hi, I tried a new port on the router and changed the cable but its still the same story. Changing the NIC is a bit on the expensive side for me but are you sure it is a hardware problem? I'm not disputing what you say, but when this problem occured, at the same time, zone alarm stopped working (no long appeared in system tray and when I attempt to load it, it gives the error: "validation failed for c:program files\zone labs\zonealarm\zlclient.exe"). Simultaneously, daemon tools no long appeared in the system tray and it also didn't work when I attempted to run it or even re-installing it didn't work. Surely a problem with the NIC shouldn't affect daemon tools? Could this possibly be a software problem as all of the above happened at the same time when my computer was affected with malware?
Thanks for you help, much appreciated!!! Fong |

Re: Internet connection drops out after 5 mins
Hi, I'm not sure if this is causing a problem but everytime I reboot the machine, and it loads to the desktop, I get "avgnt.exe - application error, The instruction at 0x0042efe2 referenced memory at 0x0000000. The memory could not be written."
Could this be causing a problem? |

Re: Internet connection drops out after 5 mins
That's a BIG issue. Since that file is part of the Avira Internet Security Suite, I'd uninstall and re-install that first, see if that helps.

Re: Internet connection drops out after 5 mins
Hi, sorry bout that! We were migrating to a different broadband provider so I had no internet access for 2 weeks. I re-installed the anti-virus and I think that cleared up the problem. However, with my new broadband box and connection, all the networked pcs in my house (wireless and ethernet cable connected) work except the problematic computer. I checked device manager and everything seems fine, I ping 127.0.0.1 and I get a good response, but when I check the network connections in control panel, I can see that under "LAN or High Speed Internet" it shows that 1394 connection is connected but "Local area connection" the status shows that the cable is unplugged. I have used a new ethernet cable I am sure it is plugged in correctly into the ethernet port, but it is not flashing! Does this mean that it is the network card at fault?! pinging 127.0.0.1 works though... Any ideas?
Many thanks! |

Re: Internet connection drops out after 5 mins
The NIC is the top suspect. Pinging the localhost address does not check the Ethernet drivers on the output of the card.

Re: Internet connection drops out after 5 mins
I have had this problem for a couple of months. I tried the various fixes online and finally realized that zone alarm seems to be the source (since my internet connection was there but zone alarm was blinking). I uninstalled Zone Alarm and *boom* internet is back and no drops.

Re: Internet connection drops out after 5 mins
I have the exact same problem. and I talked to tech guys regarding my modem which happens to work fine. The problem I believe is Zonealarm. It kept asking for me updating it and I kept ignoring it and finally one day (now) this is what happens. I have just uninstalled it and so far the internet connection is working.

Re: Internet connection drops out after 5 mins
Hi, allow me to introduce myself.
I have 5 computers in a LAN network and this same problem strucked 2 of the computers here. The rest are working normally. Basicly, after a fresh restart, the computer will simply refuse to open any http adresses after 5 mins. The thing is, file transfer between computers still work. MSN Messenger still work. Checking of emails using Outlook still works. Only anything related to a webpage fails to show up. Note that the ipconfig returns normal value, and pinging to the gateway or even websites like www.yahoo.com is successful -- just the browsing of websites are disabled. Trying on numerous types of browser is unsuccesful either. Even resetting the NETSH reset/winsock catalog reset all don't solve the issue. After numerous anti virus, anti spyware, rootkits, blah blah blah, I've realised that this problem is deeper than it seems. The last resort of 'reformatting everything' is too much to take, unless there really isn't anymore option. I've solved numerous and countless computer/networking issues but this one takes the cake. Houston, we have a problem. |
