WIFI and new computer
Im building a new computer in a few weeks. I am currently using an Embarq DSL modem that hooks straight up into the computer. My new computer will have WIFI. I need the cheapest solution to my multiple computer setup that i can get. Basically all I really need is a "DSL splitter" I guess. Here are my motherboard specs:

Re: WIFI and new computer
If you have a USB modem, you need an Ethernet modem and a router, or a modem/router combo to have multiple connections.

Re: WIFI and new computer
The phone line plugs into my modem, and a yellow wire comes out thats slightly larger than the telephone wire, i guess thats Ethernet. That wire hooks up to the back of my pc in a special port that lights up when a connection is established, what do i need?

Re: WIFI and new computer
Call your provider and ask what it would take to get an external modem.(Mine I just asked and they sent me one) Then when you add other networked equipment then you would need a router.
Router come in many flavors so figure out what you want to do and find the that fits you needs or budget. If you are like me my laptop is wireless so i have a wireless router so I can move it around the house. Generally WIFI is not as fast as hardwired.

Re: WIFI and new computer
This one does 10/100/1000Mbps
This one does 10/100Mbps If you have newer systems that take advantage of the 1000Mbps then I would go for the first one. Also you can check with your local staple or office depot and see if they are running any specials.

Re: WIFI and new computer
Transfer speed the higher the number the faster.
Just like your Internet connection, same principle. Most commen is the 100Mbps. 1000Mbps is getting more commen. 2000Mbps Is also on the way in.

Re: WIFI and new computer
There will be no difference in Internet connection speed. If you do massive file copies over the network, the gigabit network will be somewhat faster, though not as much as the difference in link speed indicates.
