Wireless G Signal Possible Xp Issue?

Hey all,

First I want to thank all of yo uin advance fo ryou help with my strange dilema.

I have set up a wireless G router in my family's home. The house is a nice 3 story home (think cosby show).

The router works fine, and a desk top on first floor, and my laptop work fine. I am having difficulties with the desktop on the third floor. It picks up the signal but then drops it or freezes.

So that person has to go with dialup most of the time.

Here are the sprecs for the pc's/

1st floor desktop windows 98, old 486. Works great. (wirless g internal card)
my laptop dell 8200 xp pro, external wirelss card (g).

3rd floor xp home new dell, wireless g via USB port.

Linksy wirless router G, I have also recently added a repeater that they now have on the market (not an extra access point).

So the 3rd floor deskptop drops the signal. however if i put my laptop right next to the desktop that drops the signal, my laptop picks up an excellent signal and does not drop the signal.

I heard some rumours that there were some isues with XP and wirless routers. I recently added the latest service pack for xp on the troubled desktop and it appeared to help, but then when my aunt attempted to run her aol interface the wirless didnt work.

Is this enough information? Any ideas?

Thank you kindly,

loki

i think if you had an issue with wireless and xp then you would get the problemt any range, not just on the 3rd floor.

I'd be looking at thr gain on the access point, my netgear AP allows me to adjust the gain, your may be turned down.

If not then there aremany things that can interfere with the signal, microwave ovens seem to operate on close frequency to mine (i am in europe though). You can try changing the frequency to see if that helps

Not specified in your post, what brand/model is the wireless G USB adapter?

In my experience with the Linksys Wireless G USB adapter, the antenna must be up , and the adapter itself needs to be as far away as possible from any electronic devices, including the monitor, PC, and speakers.
