vista notebook can't see xp pc?

I have a vista HB notebook networked wirelessly to a pc with xpsp2. File sharing is working. I can view workgroup while using the pc and navigate to all the public folders as expected on the notebook. My problem is when I am at the notebook trying to navigate to the pc. I cannot see the pc while looking at the appropriate workgroup. The only icon that shows is the notebook icon. Firewall issues have been resolved as far as I can tell - meaning I am now able to share files and have access to the notebook from the pc. Just can't navigate to the pc. Please HELP, this is for my mom!!!!

Re: vista notebook can't see xp pc?

Can you ping both ways by name?

Please post this for each of the two machines.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt:

Type the following two commands:

NBTSTAT -n

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Re: vista notebook can't see xp pc?

Thanks for your reply, I can ping by name. I realized I missed one firewall on the xp pc and this allowed me to see the xp pc from the notebook. However, after a restart on both machines, this is no longer possible. The ping by name is excellent while on the notebook. The pc has intermittent issues by name and ip address but gets 75% success. Overall: I caught a windows firewall on the pc and was then able to see pc from notebook. Still not 100% as a restart seems to have messed this up again.

Re: vista notebook can't see xp pc?

ALSO - Is it possible to keep windows firewall and make an exception for the notebook? I am familiar with the NORTON firewall where you can TRUST a certain ip address. Pinging by name works well from notebook, not so well from pc. Thanks

Re: vista notebook can't see xp pc?

Sure, you can do the same thing with either the XP or Vista firewall.
