connection issues

high there.
i`m pretty good with computers but really a bit of a netwoking noob. i`ve had my netgear dg834g v3 i`ve had this set up for about a year. i have wireless setup for my laptop and have had no problems
recently i have noticed a few probleset with my connection.

browsing is slow, torrents wont get started/ instantly turn red and streaming of video is also slow.

i have done a ping to google and most of the time i get around 40 ms with no loss.
d/l from sites such as major geeks is normal speed wise.

this is about the limit of my knowledge on networking so can anybody help me.
i`ll be happy to give more info just let me know what you need and i do it

Re: connection issues

Please review the Tech Support Forum Rules & Conduct, and you'll see we provide no support for P2P applications here at TSF. So, we can't help with that particular issue.

As far as general browsing, I'd start by shutting down ALL P2P applications and see if that changes things.

I'd also do an on-line virus scan, pick from one of these:

Trend Micro™ HouseCall

McAfee FreeScan

Kaspersky Online Virus Scanner

Panda ActiveScan with TruPrevent

Re: connection issues

thanks for your reply and i did read the rules. please read my post again and note that i did not ask for help with any p2p application, i mearly quoted it as a symptom of my problem. i have had p2p turned off for weeks as i am having problems with my connection which was why i posted in the first place.

i`ve used panda before so i`ll give it a try. incedently i`m not bad with the old hijack this and see no problems when running a scan on my pc.

as it is helpful too you i shall get on with it and post my results

Nothing jumps out at me, but you did run the HJT in safe mode, it should be run in normal mode.

Re: connection issues

Yep, if it's common to more than one machine, time to look at common elements.

Register at DSLReports and run their Line Quality Tests. Post the results link from the top of the test display page here.

Re: connection issues

You need to enable PING on the router for the line quality tests to be meaningful.

Re: connection issues

If you take a look at the results, you'll see you have massive packet loss on some of the tests, that's what I'm driving at. As far as things working for two years, stuff breaks, you should know that.

The results you're getting would certainly concern me, and would explain the issues with streaming. For your reference, here's what a good test should look like.

Re: connection issues

It's a communication issue, not a configuration issue. The fact that it happens on more than one machine points to the router, modem, or the ISP. The results you're getting on the line quality test points me to the ISP.

Re: connection issues

i`ll get on to my isp 2 moro.
incidentally i lowered my mtu by 8 to 1450 ( i suspect it was set to high due to the recent slow down) and this has seemed to have had an effect for the better. i can now stream reasonably well (not like i used to but usable) torrnets still dont work (not really fussed about that though) and browsing is hit and miss.

tests haven't got much better though although my d/l and upload speed have returned to somewhere near normal
13/2/08 sorry 02/13/08 US date format

if all else failes i`ll just reset the router and re format. i`m prob due to any way

thanks for all your help mate you a true gent, an as a result i now understand a little more about networking
