Verizon Broadband and internet sharing

Hey guys, ive got dial up and im probably going to be purchasing verizon braodband. I have a desktop pc so i would be getting a Verizon Wireless USB720 Modem http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/store/controller?item=phoneFirst&action=viewPhoneDetail&selectedPhoneId=2849. They told me i couldnt get 2 of the usbmodems and just share the bandwith, id have to purchase a wireless router. Could anyone tell me how to do this without having an actual "modem" to plug into? I have no expierince in networking but i know about computers.
Thanks!

Re: Verizon Broadband and internet sharing

I would STRONGLY suggest you get a modem with Ethernet capability, which will allow you to use a broadband wireless router. A USB modem is NOT compatible with any currently available router.

Hogwash! I have one of their stock modems in my closet from my daughter's account when she changed to Comcast. It's a one port router, the standard in this area. Westell Model 6100, has a USB port and an Ethernet port. It claims to be a DSL2 + Router, and I had it supporting two computers using a plain Ethernet switch. You can also buy a DSL modem and replace the Verizon one if they don't want to supply one for some reason.

Re: Verizon Broadband and internet sharing

Thing is were not talking about DSL were talking about broadband. Signal comes from the air, no cords invloved. The USB modem is around the size of a flash drive. All you do is plug it into a USB port and boom, you have internet.

But if you said the Westell Model 6100 has a USB port on it, i wonder if i can plug this USB broadband modem into Westell and start my networking from there?

Re: Verizon Broadband and internet sharing

I know nothing about the Verizon service you talk about, so ignore my previous post.

This looks like cell phone service. If so, you may be able to get a PCMCIA card and use that with a compatible router. http://evdo-coverage.com/evdo-v650-l...od-router.html

Re: Verizon Broadband and internet sharing

I called verizon today and talked to them. They said theres no way to share the internet on multiple computers (im sure there is). They said your not allowed and it is against the contract to have more than 1 IP adresses accessing 1 account at a time. They alos tolday me that if you have 2 computers accesing the internet at the same time, its going to run as fast as dial up. I dont see how thats possible when the connection is 800kbs - 1.4mbs.

I dont think ill buy anything from verizon ever. They seem to controlling and they lie :]

Re: Verizon Broadband and internet sharing

Well, they would really like you to buy multiple service plans.

Did you look into the EVDO routers I suggested?

Re: Verizon Broadband and internet sharing

While looking around i found that sprint offers the same service with a little better speed and no restrictions, they actually allow you to share it :]
Now my quest is to find the right router to plug a PCMCIA card into. Id probably be getting this card Novatel EVDO Merlin S720 Type II PCMCIA Card (bottom of page) http://www.mobilebroadbandnetwork.com/dyncat.cfm?catid=2494 Could you suggest any routers that i can plug the card into? Preferably a Linksys, no more than $100. $150 if you have to.

Also, do you know if any of this (tpye of connection, router, network) will prevent me from online gaming?

Thank you :]

Re: Verizon Broadband and internet sharing

Why not see if you can get the one directly from Sprint, it'll surely be supported!
