I want to get a gigabit connection between my MacBook Pro and D-Link 323 NAS using my existing gear: a Netgear GS106 gigabit desktop switch and a Netgear WGR614 wireless router. Is that possible?
Should I put the wireless router between the cable modem and the switch, or vice versa? And connect the modem and switch with a crossover cable — is that correct? But when I connect the two to the desktop switch, nothing works: they don't see each other and I can't get a wired internet connection via the Mac. Suggestions? I'm guessing there's some settings in the router's web admin panel that need tweaking, but I haven't dealt with connecting routers and switches before. |

Re: How to: WGR614 + gigabit network switch
Sure, just plug the switch into a port on the router, and connect any gigabit devices to the switch. Job done. Gigabit devices have auto-MDX ports, so no crossover cables needed anywhere in this configuration.

Re: How to: WGR614 + gigabit network switch
Yeah, still not seeing either the MacBook or the NAS as attached devices in the web admin panel for the wireless router using either a crossover cable or regular one.
There's 'LAN IP setup' and 'Static routes' sections of the admin panel, neither of which I've touched. Do I need to enable those? |
