Cannot view Workgroup. !??!

I have just set up my first home network. It involves a DLINK WBR2310 wireless router which has a wired XP desktop and a wireless Vista notebook connected to it. After setting up everything and configuring it was looking pretty good. Both PC's were fine in terms of Internet and the notebook and connect to the workgroup, view shared files and use the desktop's printer but the desktop cannot view the network. period.

On the desktop when i click on 'view workgroup computers' there is a few seconds delay and i get a error sound. no message or response.

If I attempt to browse the network manually in Windows Explorer via \\notebookname\public or simply \\notebookname or even \\notebookipaddress i get a error message 'Windows cannot find \\notebook-pc\public. Check the spelling and try again, or try searching for the item by searching for the item by clicking the Start button and then clicking Search.

I cannot find the the notebook via Search.

If I go from the Run prompt and type in \\notebookname I get a error 'The Network is not presented or not started.'

So can anyone help me fix why can I fully access the network from the notebook (vista) and not from the desktop (XP). Any suggestions would be appreciated as i have researched upon end to no avail. Also;

Only firewall is Windows Firewall which is Disabled on both systems.

When I ping the laptop either using computer name or IP address it is successful.

I can get to My Network Places and Network Connections on the desktop but cannot view the network or workgroup.

Both systems ARE in the same workgroup.

Both have NetBIOS over TCP/IP turned on (enabled).

Do this for each machine.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt:

Type the following two commands:

NBTSTAT -n

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Check your Services are Started on all PCs:

• Computer Browser
• DHCP Client
• DNS Client
• Network Connections
• Network Location Awareness
• Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
• Server
• TCP/IP Netbios helper
• Workstation

Note: You can check the services in Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services.

All of these services should be started, and their startup type should be automatic (or perhaps manual).

All were already started and auto, expect Network Location Awareness on the XP which is started and manual.

I guess I'm at a loss. All the services are started, and the IPCONFIG and NBTSTAT all look normal. You can PING both ways by name. Not much else there...


Although you shouldn't need this, let's do a stack reset on each machine anyway.

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows XP with SP2.

Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt:

Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ip reset reset.log

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reboot the machine.




TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows Vista.

Start, Programs\Accessories and right click on Command Prompt, select "Run as Administrator" to open a command prompt.

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reset IPv4 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log

Reset IPv6 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log

Reboot the machine.
