Transfering files from XP to Vista computer?
I'm trying to set up a network to transfer files from my old XP computer to my new Vista Dell. Both computers right now can access the internet through the router (Linksys).
My XP machine can see the shared folders on the Vista machine. On my vista machine, I can see the XP machine on the network map, however, I can't see it under windows explorer. I can ping the XP computer from my Vista computer via the IP address. I've tried turning off the windows firewalls on both computers at the same time without any effect. File and printer sharing is enabled on both computers. Any help would be appreciated. |

Re: Transfering files from XP to Vista computer?
If you can't ping by name, there's still a problem.
Do this on each machine. Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt: Type the following two commands: NBTSTAT -n IPCONFIG /ALL Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter. Paste the results in a message here. If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Re: Transfering files from XP to Vista computer?
Check your Services are Started on all PCs:
Note: You can check the services in Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services. All of these services should be started, and their startup type should be automatic (or perhaps manual).

Re: Transfering files from XP to Vista computer?
All of those services are started on both computers and are on automatic on the Vista machine. On the xp machine Networkk Connects and Network Location Awareness are both manual, and the rest are automatic.
Thanks for your help, by the way! |

Re: Transfering files from XP to Vista computer?
Are you able to ping by computer name both ways? If these are the only two computers in the "network", you have a browsing issue, neither of them is the master browser.

Re: Transfering files from XP to Vista computer?
So from my XP machine I can ping Vista with both the Vista's computer name and IP address.
From my Vista machine, pinging the computer name of the XP gets me the message "Ping request could not find host pandora. Please check the name and try again." If I try pinging the IP address it says it lost 4 packets. So if it is a master browser issue, what do I do?

Re: Transfering files from XP to Vista computer?
It's a firewall issue. Failure to ping is almost always a firewall issue.
