Networking win95 and winXP

hi guys,

wondering how to network an old P200MHz machine running win95 in to a Linksys Modem/Router for internet access and also to share resources with my winXP machine.
I've been playing around with it for a few hours now and ive setup the hardware properly (drivers etc.) but have only got up to pinging each machine with the other one so i think the network itself is ok but i cant seem to get the win95 computer to access the internet connection from the router. I also cant find any sites that actually cover networking between a 95 machine and an XP one.

any ideas would be apprieciated. Ta

well, i am going to go ahead and rattle out some ideas for you.

if you have already done any of these, skip doing them, but read it all anyhow.

first, i assume you want to connect the pc's directly to the router, and you don't intend on sharing internet through one of the pc's to the other...

if that's true, then you won't have too much trouble with this.

in windows 95, you must go to the control panel and make sure tcp/ip is in the list of protocols.
on top of that, click the share files and printers box.

since you have ping throwing back a signal, i can only assume you have the ip addresses either set to automatically obtain ip, or you have them set statically to something that is working.

once you have that machine set to share, you will want to right click on a drive or folder and choose share.

you can share printers too the same way.

ok, on to the windows xp machine.

right click on a drive or folder and choose sharing.
it will ask you if you want to set up access rights or not, you will need to set it to use simple file sharing for 95 to see it.

then you should be able to see either machine from the other.

you might have to set them both to the same workgroup name.

windows 95 usually doesnt see any of the machines until you do a search for it by name.

windows xp usually doesnt have an issue.

if you hit an snags, post back.

ok, ive been doing some more digging and found that i can VNC from either box into the other no probs. I think the problem is really to do with the win95 machine and my router, just cant get it to connect to the internet but the network seems fine. wierd.

cheers

Do you run a Firewall? If so check that it is not stopping the win95 machine from accessing the internet.

If you can run VNC between the two computers, you're almost there.

Please tell us what Start, Run, WINIPCFG displays for the IP address, default gateway, and DNS server addresses. Then, on the XP machine, do:

Open a DOS window and type:

IPCONFIG /ALL >C:RESULT.TXT

Open C:\RESULT.TXT with Notepad and copy/paste the entire results here.
