NAT on Linksys Wrt54G v3 causing online gaming issues

I have a wrt54g v3 router controlling my home LAN network which consists of 3 xp machines wired, 1 vista wired, and 1 xp wireless.

Of the problem computers (the ones I'm trying to fix) one is running Windows vista, the other is the wireless xp. On the wireless XP, I hooked up my 360 to xbox live. On the vista and have a couple of online comp games such as Heroes of Might and Magic 3 that are not fun to play b/c of connection.

On xbox live, I noticed my NAT was set to Moderate and my friend and I cannot contact each other at all. We can't join games, private chat, etc.

On the vista computer, I have had issues for a long time. I have always recieved error messages along the lines of IP adress not found or could not contact other player. I am pretty sure it all has to do with my NAT on the router. I have done everything as far as disabling firewalls i am aware of and forwarding ports etc etc, even setting computer as DMZ.

I am officially stuck as to what I need to do to free my computer/xbox 360 so I can play with anybody, and cut the chains. How can I get rid of or workaround this NAT dilemma?

Thank you very much for any assistance

sincerely

Re: NAT on Linksys Wrt54G v3 causing online gaming issues

Start with the latest firmware for the router. Also, you might want to configure the XBOX to be in the DMZ of the router to eliminate any port forwarding issues.

Re: NAT on Linksys Wrt54G v3 causing online gaming issues

Firmware I am currently using is:

Firmware Version: v3.01.3 - HyperWRT 2.0

I have tried that with xbox yes but then I can't set computer as DMZ. I think that it fixes the xbox issue some of the time but I still get connection problems.

But my focus is the computer connection. Xbox is just a side issue.

Have you considered the latest version of the stock firmware?

Since this clearly seems to be a router configuration or compatibility issue, you probably need to do something there. I don't know anything about that firmware.

Re: NAT on Linksys Wrt54G v3 causing online gaming issues

Well would NAT be the cause maybe? I'm not sure what is the exact thing I need to change in the router settings.

I changed to dd-wrt by the way

Try putting the machine in the DMZ.

Well, maybe your modem is really a modem/router, what's the exact make/model?

Re: NAT on Linksys Wrt54G v3 causing online gaming issues

Oh we are using not even really a modem. It just splits the internet cord to the router. Is a tiny little black thing without a name or anything on it..

Re: NAT on Linksys Wrt54G v3 causing online gaming issues

The Internet feed is coming from somewhere, and in a home, that's almost surely a modem or another router. Please work a little harder on finding out what the "little black thing" is connected to, and what it's make/model is. You may be looking in the wrong place for a solution to this issue.

Re: NAT on Linksys Wrt54G v3 causing online gaming issues

We have an antenna on the roof that connects to the ISP. From the antenna runs a ethernet cord into a little black box that sends the signal into the router and our computers. The only hardware involved with the connection is:
Antenna
Little Black Box
Router
Computers

Re: NAT on Linksys Wrt54G v3 causing online gaming issues

Let's try a different tact. Access the router's configuration pages and post a screen shot of the status page and the WAN configuration page.

To post a screen shot of the active window, hold the Alt key and press the PrtScn key. Open the Windows PAINT application and Paste the screen shot. You can then use PAINT to trim to suit, and save it as a JPG format file. To upload it to TSG, open the full reply window and use the Manage Attachments button to upload it here.
