Cry [SOLVED] Connect to Internet

I'm at my wits end. Can someone please help?

I have a year-old HP desktop that cannot connect to the Internet using either IE6 or Firefox or anything else. I can ping some websites and cannot ping others.

One weird thing is that I tried to access Norton Help (thinking it could be the firewall or something) and on a page called "Connecting to Support" it states it is unable to identify the network adapter used to conenct to the internet and at the bottom it has a listing for "Missing Network Adaptors" with Ethernet - HP EN1207D-TX PCI 10/100 Fast Ethernet Adapter underneath.

Do I need a new NIC?

I've ruled out the Ethernet cable (swapped it), the router (bypassed it), the cable modem (using it to make this post). AND updated (didn't work) then reinstalled (didn't work) the driver for the NIC that the Local Connection is using (Realtek).

My System

Re: Cannot connect to Internet

Is there a connected (LAN) sign below the taskbar near the clock there.

If yes, then it could be your browser setting problem...

If not, then perhaps your ethernet card is malfunctioning
Do you get a new hardware detected when you start your computer, asking for a software for your ethernet card when you start

Re: Cannot connect to Internet

Totally uninstall Norton, then use the Norton Removal Tool to finish the job.

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows XP with SP2.

Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt:

Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ip reset reset.log

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reboot the machine.

See if you can get proper connection now.

Grin Re: Cannot connect to Internet

Thank you for your responses! I don't really know how I fixed it because I repeated the same steps I tried a million times, but somehow I got it working.

Totally removed Norton, totally removed Live Update, ipconfig/release, ipconfig/renew, netsh int ip reset reset.log (the last 3 steps, at least 5 times), rebooted, and bam I'm back in business.

Phew!

Thanks again!

Red Faced Re: [UNSOLVED] Cannot connect to Internet

I'm afraid I spoke too soon. I suspect a virus or malware of some kind.

Does this sound familiar to anyone?

This is wired access, btw, not wireless.

When booted normally, I cannot connect to the Internet via IE6 or Firefox nor can I download email to MS Outlook. I can, however, update definition files (AVG Free Anti-virus and SuperAntiSpyware) and ping websites (www.yahoo.com). NIC appears to be functioning normally and packets appear to have been sent and received when looking at Local Area Connection.

Internet access appears to act completely normally when computer is booted in safe mode with networking.

Before I disable each and every startup program and system service one at a time to identify the culprit, I'm hoping someone else has seen this behavior and can help me.

Should I go to the malware forum and post a hijackthis log?

Thank you!

Re: [SOLVED] Cannot connect to Internet

Well, what I'd do to speed the process is disable the MSCONFIG items in groups. Start with about 25% of them, and when you hit the group that seems to fix it, narrow it down within that group. A binary search makes the process much faster than doing it one at a time.

Re: Cannot connect to Internet

I turned off all of the startup programs and I still could not connect.

I then turned off all of the services that are also turned off in Safe Mode with Networking. Still could not connect.

Then I discovered a handy tool called "Network Diagnostics". I would appreciate your opinion. It looks like I have 2 NICs, not sure why, and one of them fails, but is inconsistent.

Re: Cannot connect to Internet

You don't actually think I'm going to try to interpret that enormous pile of data, do you?

Did you try what I suggested?

Re: Cannot connect to Internet

I'm sorry. I did try everything you suggested. I've got HP in chat and they don't know what the hell they are doing. I'm about at my wits end.

Can you please just answer me one question - re: the diagosis output. Does it look to you like I have 2 NICs, one which has failed (HP) and one which has passed (Realtek)? If so, why would this desktop have 2 NICs and why would it not connect to the Internet if one failed?

Gaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!

Re: Cannot connect to Internet

If you are using the working NIC, there's no reason it won't connect. This system I'm using has two built-in NIC's, and the drivers on one of them apparently died. I just disabled it and I use the other one.

Let's see this, it's not so big that I can't digest it.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt:

Type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Here's IPCONFIG/ALL when I cannot connect in Normal mode. FYI - it looks exactly like this when I CAN connect in Safe Mode with Networking:
