Re: Cannot connect to Internet
after reading all this it definately sounds like you have an add-on affecting your browsing. Scan with spybot with all updates, scan with adaware with all updates and see if you catch anything.

Re: Cannot connect to Internet
Thank you both.
I have done what you suggested JohnWill but it didn't work. Sigh. I'm going to try a Panda scan again. I have done Ad-Aware, Spybot, Bitdefender, Panda, AVG Free, AVG Rootkit, etc. However, doesn't the fact that I got a Tcpip Event ID 4202 (network adapter disconnected) 5 times when this problem first began mean something? I never got that message before and haven't gotten it since. Or, how about the fact that I have a hidden device HP EN1207D-TX PCI 10/100 Fast Ethernet Adapter - Packet Scheduler Miniport that I can't uninstall? This device doesn't show up by itself like the other network adapter devices do, just as this Packet Scheduler Miniport. Could this device be the one that disconnected? The bad thing is I can't restore. I know, it's really stupid, but I don't have a restore point. I'm an idiot. I'm not looking forward to reformating my harddrive and starting over... |

Re: Cannot connect to Internet
Try resetting IE7 to defaults, here's the procedure: http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2006/06/12/628499.aspx

Re: Cannot connect to Internet
resetting ie7 didn't work...
I noticed the arp error in my network diagnostics and I did a arp -a in both safe mode and normal mode. Results are slightly different: Normal: Interface: 192.168.2.102 --- 0x10003 Internet Address Physical Address Type 192.168.2.1 00-04-e2-76-e3-9b dynamic Safe: Interface: 192.168.2.102 --- 0x2 Internet Address Physical Address Type 192.168.2.1 00-04-e2-76-e3-9b dynamic Notice that the 0x10003 and the 0x2 are different? I have absolutely no idea what they mean, but one works and one doesn't so it must mean something! Last edited by kstucchi : 02-07-2008 at 06:47 PM. |

Re: Cannot connect to Internet
Truthfully, I don't know what they mean either, but I can't imagine it's significant.

Re: Cannot connect to Internet
SOLVED!!!
It was a problem with AOL Parental Controls!!!! As soon as I disabled it manually by deleting 2 files (hung when I tried to uninstall), everything was fixed. I discovered this because I did a file search of all files that were updated the Day The Internet Stopped Working and noticed that a whole lot of AOL files were updated at the precise time that I booted that day. Once I removed AOL Parental Controls and rebooted, I was back in business. Thank you for sticking with me and giving me things to try. I am SOOOOO happy that things are working again. I'll now take a restore point... |

Re: nnect to Internet
I followed these instructions:
http://www.brentozar.com/archive/200...ntal-controls/ I didn't delete the xml file (folder did not exist), but I did delete the other 2 and everything's working fine now. |
