trying to share internet connection
I am trying to connect two computers to my broadband connection. I have the cable modem hooked to SpeedStream SS2105 fast ethernet switch, then one cable going out to my windows xp home edition computer which as you can see is working fine. The other cable goes to my computer with windows 98se. That computer has problems. The connection is lit up where the cable goes into the computer. But when I open my browser it says there is no connection. Is there any configuring I need to do? Am I missing anything? (besides the boat) I'm rather illiterate about the networking thing so if you can explain anything I still need to do...please explain in child terms.... Thank you for any help!

Re: trying to share internet connection
A cable modem USUALLY can't to NAT (net address translation) unless the modem is a router too. Cable modems usually are configured as a bridge, that is packets are passed to and from the Internet without change.
I think, from what you said, that if you unhook your XP machine from the switch, your 98 machine will get on the Internet after a reboot. If it does that proves that the modem is a bridge. So to make it work, get a router. Turn on NAT. Plug the two computers in. Router instructions are usually very good about hooking multiple machines up to it. If you can afford it, get a router that has wireless, so if you have a lap top or have friends over they can connect too. Good luck. |
