Ethernet Port

My internet is real sluggish right now. I have a wired network. I have an ethernet port on the back of my HP computer which is where I plug the cable coming from my router. I opened the case of the computer and on the other side of the port is a small silver box hooked to the motherboard. Is the network card part of the motherboard? How can I fix my internet problem?

Thanx in advance,
steel

Re: Ethernet Port

Yes, the ethernet is part of the motherboard.

Try this. Boot your XP in safe mode, the F8 key on the reboot. Pick the option safe mode with network connection. Let it finish booting and go to your favorite web site. See if the loads are faster. The screen will come up in VGA. If you can get to the Internet faster then something is running on your computer is eating up bandwidth. I would suggest you go to one of the neighboring forum on this site that deals with Virus's and follow the directions there. If safe mode is slow, generally something is wrong up stream from you on the Internet.

The people on those forum are very good and they have very good HOW-TO's.

Good luck.
