XP SP2 DOS network printing problem

I have an interesting problem, I think I know what it is but not how to fix it. Here's an example of a customers setup:

DOS based Point of Sale software, using the netbeui protocol to communicate to a file server program.
Peer to Peer network of XP Pro SP2 workstations. Both stations use classic style sharing for files and folders.
Station 1 has login of Joe as admin, no password
Station 2 has login of JoeFrat as admin, no password. Guest account is on.

Shared printer is Okidata ML520 on JoeFrat shared as oki.

Station Joe uses net use command that looks like this:
net use lpt2 \\JoeFrat\Oki

Command completes successfully. When I try dir>lpt2 I get "Access is denied".
I've tried the firewall on, off, disabled in services. Checked the exceptions in the firewall, made sure file and print sharing was checked. Tried different share names, login names and passwords....no dice. Research on MS support site and google returns one possible solution, listed here:
http://support.microsoft.com/defaul...kb;en-us;312055
The problem with this is by using the old style of "unsafe" printer sharing, there's no need for a password.

A couple of things that I've noticed are that all of the customers with the problem have updated to SP2 via automatic updates and/or windows update and any existing net use commands work fine. It's only when I try to create a new connection that I get the access denied message.

Thoughts or ideas?
