Cannot connect to wireless router
I have a Netgear 614v6 wireless router. I have been using this router for over a year with no problems. Then we got a XBox 360 for Christmas and and connected it to the wireless router. Ever since then I cannot connect to the wireless router with my computer. We have one other computer in the house and it connects fine. We now have the XBox wired but the wireless still does not work on my computer.
I did take my computer to a place where I knew they had wireless internet and it worked fine there. |

Re: Cannot connect to wireless router
First off, try disabling all encryption on the router.
Next, remove any stored wireless profiles on the computer. Finally, search for wireless networks and see if you can connect. If that works, then you can enable encryption again, remove the stored profiles, and connect using the key.

Re: Cannot connect to wireless router
Forget that for now, if encryption is disabled, and you removed all the stored profiles, what happens when you try to connect?
Let's see this as well. Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt: Type the following command: IPCONFIG /ALL Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter. Paste the results in a message here. If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Re: Cannot connect to wireless router
Pull out the connectors of ur router and modem (as well as the power supply connectors) and plug them back again, and wait for a bit until the modem/router connects each other fully. That usually fix the problem.

Re: Cannot connect to wireless router
You appear to have issues with the router, cable, or your Network card in the machine. Have you tried a new cable, and a different port on the router? If you can't PING your Default Gateway address (the router), that's a problem. I see a couple of them got through, further reinforcing my belief that this is a hardware issue.

Re: Cannot connect to wireless router
If I took my computer to another location that had wireless internet and my computer worked fine there would that probably mean that it is my router?
I really appreciate your help! Last edited by dgr : 01-23-2008 at 04:46 PM. |

Re: Cannot connect to wireless router
Yep, first step is to divide and conquer, find out which end is failing.

Re: Cannot connect to wireless router
I noticed yesterday that my internet connection has been really slow when connected to the wireless router with a cable and also my daughters computers connection was really slow when connected wireless. When connected directly to the modem things went more quickly. So now I am thinking it is my router.

Re: Cannot connect to wireless router
That sounds like a place to start.
![]() Try doing an Internet speed test with the router in the picture, and again with a direct connection to the modem. Compare the results. A couple of popular Internet speed test sites in the US. Speakeasy Speed Test DSLReports Speed Test

Re: Cannot connect to wireless router
Speed Test directly to the modem:
Download Speed: 275 kbps (34.4 KB/sec transfer rate) Upload Speed: 180 kbps (22.5 KB/sec transfer rate) Speed Test through the router: Download Speed: 273 kbps (34.1 KB/sec transfer rate) Upload Speed: 181 kbps (22.6 KB/sec transfer rate) They look about the same to me. |

Re: Cannot connect to wireless router
Yes they do. I don't think this is a router issue. Do you really have a 256kbit connection?
Register at DSLReports and run their Line Quality Tests. Post the results link from the top of the test display page here.
