[SOLVED] Windows ME Internet Connection

I see this has been dormant for a while, but to extend instead of start new thread... I would like to ask how I can set only the 'dns specific' info for ME. Been away from it too long to recall.
I can ping a site by ip address on the internet but no names such as yahoo.com, won't work but yahoo's ip address pings fine.
Can I leave the ip to auto and just hard set dns only? When I try under the dns tab and enter the 2 addresses I then get a message that to use dns I must specify a host name for this computer. ???
Once again, I can ping the internet, just can't use a 'name'.
thanks,
Mike

Re: Windows ME Internet Connection

Hi Mike, as you can see I moved your thread. It is always best to start your own and being tucked in an old one where it was you would have prob never got assistance.
Be patient, johnwill will come along and help you out

Re: Windows ME Internet Connection

just trying to keep the number of posts down, I have trouble finding a thread with the search tool that applies to what I need to know. I'll bet it's been covered, just don't seem to find it easily.

Re: Windows ME Internet Connection

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt:

Type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

You might try replacing your DNS server. Follow the instructions at OpenDNS for Windows and configure to use OpenDNS for your DNS server. See if that makes a difference.

Re: Windows ME Internet Connection

I was working on this via the phone for a friend, made a trip over and found newdotnet among a few other problems. Lost dns prior to removal of this malware, which seemed odd as I thought that removal of newdotnet caused the problem.
Removed malware, ran winsock repair tool and removed and reinstalled nic and tcpip and it works now.
Sometimes over the phone I just don't get the whole story from the ones I am trying to assist. Thanks for the help and the info on open dns, I am using it at home now on my own network.
