Cannot 'see' my XP computer from my Vista

I've tried EVERYTHING to try and get my Vista laptop to communicate with an XP desktop computer on my home network. My Vista is connected to the router wirelessly and the XP computer is hardwired to the same router with no success. THe funny thing is, the XP computer can access the VISTA computer and both can use the same internet connection.

Any suggestions? All the suggested solutions on Microsoft's webpage have been worthless.

this looks like a firewall issue. are you able to ping the XP from the Vista computer?

Re: Cannot 'see' my XP computer from my Vista

Sorry for the delay. I was on a very short vacation.

Anyway...

I pinged the XP computer from the VISTA computer and it was unsuccessful. Any suggested changes to the firewall?

Thanks!

Neither. It's my wife's computer and she only uses the Windows Firewall.

did you ping by name or IP?

ensure both the computers are in the same workgroup

boot the XP comp into Safe Mode with Networking and try pinging

Re: Cannot 'see' my XP computer from my Vista

Let's see this for the XP computer.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt:

Type the following two commands:

NBTSTAT -n

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.
