Okay, so I have two computers that I would like to configure into a LAN, at least, and preferably figure out how to get the other one on the internet. This computer is a Dell, Pentium 4, running Windows XP (Computer #1). It has cable internet directly through a modem. Now, my husband has an HP Celeron processer running ME (Computer #2) and a router. How do I make these three things play together? I've tried hooking it up, but I can't get computer #2 to recognize the internet, even when plugged directly into the modem. I suspect that the internet and LAN are different issues, but I don't know how to configure the computers to recoginze each other, nor how to go about establishing connectivity in computer #2.
Any feedback would be great, thanks. |

Re: LAN networking/windows ME internet connectivity
Well, you MUST power cycle the modem when you change the attached computer, that's probably one issue.
The real solution here is a broadband router, which will allow you to seamlessly share the Internet connection. Turn off the ME computer and the modem. Connect the ME computer to the modem. Turn on the modem, wait for a steady connection. Boot the ME machine. Let's see this after that. Start, Run, COMMAND to open a command prompt: Type the following command: IPCONFIG /ALL >C:\IPCONFIG.TXT Open c:\IPCONFIG.TXT in NOTEPAD, copy and paste all of it in a message here. If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Re: LAN networking/windows ME internet connectivity
who is your internet service provider and what is the make/model of your modem? some cable service providers use a MAC filter which allows only the first computer that was connected to the modem to connect to the internet
