Thumbs Down Download speed/internet speed has massively reduced :(

Ok im using my mobo's wireless reciever which is positioned on my desktop nicely, and is getting "very good - excellent" strength all the time (currently displaying excellent). speed says 11mpbs -54mpbs w/e but the problem isnt my reciever at all.

We have (as I think you know by now) tiscalli's 8 meg wireless internet.

Router is a Thompson speedtouch0059EB
It is a 802.11G speed type
I/we are using WEP encryption with a hexidecimal code found on the router

(If you need my default gateway/ip address/subnet mask then here they are):

IP: 192.168.1.64
Subnetmask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.1.254

Before i had portforwarded and set up my router to use a specific IP address to get the fastest speed possible and to ensure File sharing was quick and not capped and to ensure ports were unblocked.

Max normal speed = 536KBPS (which is by far fast enough)
Lowest normal speed = 350-450KBPS (bad servers, lag, bad pings etc)

But now for some odd reason we are currently getting all of the time...a whopping average of...!!!

9KPBS!! ***?!

I've tried screwing around with the phone line, turning the router on/off checking the plugs, connections etc...

Even on the downstairs computer which is connected directly via the ethernet is suffering from the same dreadful speeds of 9-11KPBS

w/o AV: same
w/o firewall: same
virus check: same
spyware/defrag/temp internet files deletion: same
fast...local...secure server with no caps or limitation, trying to download a file...: same

Nothing has worked...now i know about network traffic etc but to be this low?! come on...its about a 60th!! of my my speed.

I cant even run a proper speedtest its so slow but the one i could manage to do says 0.08mbps which is 8kpbs!

I know its not my new computer because first getting it internet was fine, getting max stable speeds of 500KBPS+ which is normal and perfectly quick, it only seems to of happened in the past few days, 1st time we noticed this massive drop was 2 days ago (got computer 3 days ago). But as I said it happens on the downstairs 1 as well which is a direct ethernet connection.

What the hell is going on? This is beyond ludicrous...

Is it time to scream and shout at tiscalli? lol.

Re: Download speed/internet speed has massively reduced :(

what?! No way!! i have this:

Realtek RTL8187 Wireless 802.11b/g 54Mbps USB 2.0 Network Adapter.

But it aint usb my arial thingy, it connects via some odd gold screw socket thingy...

But that says "b/g" so it should be fine...its the wireless device which came with my mobo (see my system)

Could that be the problem?

If so i cant see how it was fine and fast 1st day i had it then the next it grinds to a halt and i cant see how it would effect the downstairs computer connected via the ethernet cable either!

Re: Download speed/internet speed has massively reduced :(

BTW my router i just found out is a thompson speedtouch ST585 V6 running with 802.11g...

So can anyone else confirm that the device supplied by my motherboard is causing the hickups for my massive drop in speed?

If so i'll just re-install my other 1...

Re: Download speed/internet speed has massively reduced :(

Ok that didnt work (jeeez 6 posts in a row..sorry)

Can I have some help here?

Are there any good testers I can try out to see how stable my connection is on like...packet transfer speeds, up/down, stream etc. As a guy on the UT3 forums says i have my internet configured incorrectly as it cant connect to his download server at all even with all ports excepted/initialized/firewalls virus etc all off...

Even gone through PF enough bloody times lol...

Register at DSLReports and run their Line Quality Tests. Post the results link from the top of the test display page here.

Re: Download speed/internet speed has massively reduced :(

I cant seem to get my IP to ping even with all my firewalls disabled and configured...

There no guide on how to ping commodo firewall or bitdefenders firewalls...

Anyway here are the results:

http://www.dslreports.com/linequality/nil/2337152

i think from that im gettin 247KBPS max...that shouldnt be it should be 536 KBPS (if i was right next to the exchange it should be around 1 meg but im about a mile or so away I think so 536KBPS is my normal best, which it should be now, min with normal best should be around 280+ :().

How can I get Pingable? I need a guide for my software...

Re: Download speed/internet speed has massively reduced :(

You need to configure your router to allow pings so the important part of the test can run.

Re: Download speed/internet speed has massively reduced :(

How do I go about doing that? What if I was to do a reset of the router...by like holding the button down or w/e ?

Re: Download speed/internet speed has massively reduced :(

I'd start with the user's manual for the router. You need to configure in the WAN or Administrative section for ICMP (PING) requests.

Re: Download speed/internet speed has massively reduced :(

Ok its 2 am here now, i just got reported speeds at a peak of 670KBPS...what the hell?

Either I have the entire line to my self, or my fiddling payed off. have to see again in morning

But what i dont get is in the command promt on windows...I go to ping my "true ip" and i get no errors...but i go to do there line test and it still says it cant ping...

This is insane! even forcefully disabling all firewalls does not work! Uhh i hate networks some times lol

I'm still "unpingable" on dsl reports...

Let's see what Gibson's ShieldsUp says about your network.

Re: Download speed/internet speed has massively reduced :(

Thanks i shall try this when I get ho,e from work :)

Oh btw on speedtest.net i cant seem to get ANY upload at all, it hangs after download and just sits there...

A while back I downloaded a registry tweak (talking like over a year ago) I think it was for this computer...to try and optimise the speeds.

Somehow I doubt that this could effect whats happening today as i've never had aproblem until now

But still it pisses me off how speedtest.net does not seem to think I can upload at all whilst othersites can.

On tiscallis speedtest i get "infinity" saying I can download at "infinite" mb's LOL so I think there really is something up with the setup.

But I shall do those tests ASAP at that site

Re: Download speed/internet speed has massively reduced :(

***?!?!

Ok again my speeds have now jumped to 712KPBS second download...

I changed round my plugs and sockets again like last time...now we just wait and see if it remains stable...

Something still tells me tiscalli are capping us for some reason or my gaming computers security is simply to tight.

What info exactly do you want from that sight? I'll get as much as i can.

EDIT:

The only thing thats wrong now is that i cant seem to get any speedtest to show my upload speed, but on my other computer its around 240KBPS which i aint got no idea if thats fast lol but i can upload things fine, music, pictures etc.

That site basically says my computer is UBER secure or my network w/e and that apparently its so good it "doesnt even exist on the internet" lol ***?!

Also it seems to say my security is so tight that it wont even allow the pinging of some indirect listen ports or something , which could indeed be the reason why dsl reports cant ping me...

Well all seems fine for the moment....

Please leave this thread open while I investigate over the coming few days to see if it remians stable :D

Thanks for your help up to now + the links :)
