Wireless printer and router
Three laptops connected to a wireless internet connection. I have a new printer in the office that I want these three laptops to be able to print. I bought a wireless router. The manual suggested peer to peer connection for the printer. The router has a modem connection but I dont have a modem. I would think I have to connect to the wireless connection first in order to then tell my computer to print to that printer. Im confused.

Re: Wireless printer and router
Please supply the following info, exact make and models of the equipment please.
Make and exact model of the printer. Make and exact model of the router. Model numbers can usually be obtained from the label on the device. Version and patch level of Windows on all affected machines, i.e. XP-Home (or XP-Pro), SP1-SP2, Vista, etc. I don't understand the "wireless Internet connection", can you explain that? Are you using a router or now for those wireless connections?

Re: Wireless printer and router
Sorry, The printer is a Brother MFC 440 CN. The router is a LINKSYS wireless G Broadband Router with 4 port switch. The internet connection is satelite on site and the laptops are connected through a wireless connection installed on the computers.

Re: Wireless printer and router
Did you follow the instructions in the Network User's Guide? I can't seem to find a link to it on their site, but the User's Manual mentions it. I suspect that's where the solution lies. You could also contact Brother's tech support and ask.

Re: Wireless printer and router
The LINKSYS says to plug the ehternet connection into the modem. I dont have a modem in my office. Does that mean I have to go to the office next door with the satelite dish and locate the router there. Or do I plug the router into the printer. The printer has to have some way of communicating wireless to our laptops. I assumed the router was going to perform that function.

Re: Wireless printer and router
The printer should be connected to a port on your router.
Are the laptops connecting to the router? I guess I'm somewhat confused exactly how you're connecting to the Internet, since you don't use that router. Whatever router is supplying the connectivity to the wireless machines is where the printer has to connect.

Re: Wireless printer and router
Thanks for that. I think Im getting closer to understanding. We all three have wireless network cards in our computer. We have a satilite internet service that we connect to. The printer sits in an office that is 50 feet from where the actual satilite is. Now the printer has to connect to something which I may have assumed it was going to be the LINKSYS router that I purchased. The printer has an IP address but unless it has some form or card, hard wire or router then it (I assum) cant commuicate on the network. Because I think the network has to see the printer in order for us to map or connect to the printer. So do I plug my router into my computer and reconfigure the router with the printer IP address the go out to see if I can connect to the printer through the router?

Re: Wireless printer and router
do the wireless cards in the three computers connect to the satellite service? if yes, then the cards will not be able to wirelessly connect to the Linksys router at the same time. one network adapter cannot have two IP addresses

Re: Wireless printer and router
You have to connect the printer to the same network that those three laptops connect to if you expect to print to it. I'm assuming at the base location where the satellite receiver is, there's a wireless router. Plug the printer into that.
