Download speeds strangely low...
Hi. At Christmas I was lucky enough to get my own pc. It is a huge improvement from my families with things such as core2quad processor, HD Radeon 2400 Pro Graphics Card, 500GB hard drive, 2Gb RAM or 4 I forget ^^. I am running on Windows XP SP 2. Anyway my friend also got a computer, his spec is not as good but when he is downloading files he is going at about 2.5 megabytes per second, he is connected to his router via a belkin usb card. Anyway the thing that gets me he is with Virgin media too, we both has a linksys WRT model router, we both use something to connect our computer to the router, mine being a NetGear ethernet plug. When I download things I go at say 250kb per second on a good day :/, even with my anti virus and everything turned off. It is not to do with the computer. When we signed up for virgin media our download speed was supposed to be 4mps...I'd be happy with 2mbps for sure. I have tried network optimizers and clean ups etc. However does not help much at all. I jave ram various spyware, malware, virus scans etc/ these proved no results. I ran a scan on iolo and it tells me I am downloading at a peek of 1.79mbps I'd love that but where is that when I download?
Hope someone can help, thanks. |

Re: Download speeds strangely low...
Hi Zuntyh, Welcome to TSF
Your speed will directly depend on what you're downloading and where from. Along with other things like traffic, distance etc. You could run a simple test by find a file and getting your friend to download it, while downloading it yourself to see if there are any major differences in speed.

Re: Download speeds strangely low...
Register at DSLReports and run their Line Quality Tests. Post the results link from the top of the test display page here.

Re: Download speeds strangely low...
Not speed tests, Line Quality Tests. They're quite different.

Re: Download speeds strangely low...
Well, you have pretty high latency to the first hop, but other than that, the results look OK.

Re: Download speeds strangely low...
You're confusing bits and bytes.
If you get 250kbyte/sec downloads, that's all you can expect on a 2mbit/sec link. Remember, bytes have 8 bits, right?

Re: Download speeds strangely low...
Well yeah your right 2mbits would be like 200kb but my download has been 330kb/second before, it is definetly 2 Mega Bytes Per second it is supposed to be running it. I was almost hit by joy when I downloaded my last thing, as soon as it started it said 1.79mbps then it went straight down to 330kb/s :(.

Re: Download speeds strangely low...
Well, you were getting better than expected results, but I don't see anything wrong with what you're getting now.

Re: Download speeds strangely low...
I'm lucky to get 300kb/s. I just really think it would benefit myself greatly if I didn't have to leave my computer on for hours...especially since it's a 650W PSU. I recently downloaded a game called Rappelz which was 1.79 GB...if I had 2mbps then that would only be 900 seconds :S Or 15 minutes :o instead of like 5 hours that I did spend xD. Then patching it took another good few hours. I wasn't really expecting a solution, I'm one of those people who just keep getting pounded with bad luck.

Re: Download speeds strangely low...
Hmm... At 300kbyte/sec, it should take less than two hours to download 1.8 gigabytes. Of course, I get something like that in about 10 minutes. here.
