[SOLVED] Unable to access network resources

I have 2 XP Home machines, one desktop, one laptop. Neither can see the shared resources of the other. They are connected via a Netgear 4 port/wireless router. Desktop is cabled to router, laptop accesses wirelessly.
Laptop is able to access Internet via the router but cannot access desktop's shares nor a new laser printer that is directly connected/cabled to router. When I set up the laser printer the other day using the printer's install program the laptop was able to locate the printer on the network and install drivers but when I tried to print test page it didn't work. Ran trouble shooter and it was unsuccessful at pinging the printer.

Desktop prints to the networked printer with not issues.
I am running Trend Micro PC-cillin Internet security on both machines and have tried to remedy situation by turning off firewall to no avail.

Have tested each machine's IP stack by successfully pinging the loopback address. Desktop is able to ping the router successfully. Laptop is not able to ping router however it is communicating with it in order to get Internet access. Workgroup name appears to be the same on both machines "Mshome".

Sharing did work at one time between machines. Changes since then that I can recall: I've had to replace the hard drive on the laptop and reinstall windows xp. Uninstalled Norton System works/anti-virus and replaced with aforementioned Trend Micro product.

Simple sharing shouldn't be so difficult. Any ideas?

Re: Unable to access network resources

Failure to ping is almost always a firewall configuration issue. You need to correct this first.

Re: Unable to access network resources

Thanks for getting back to me.
I consulted with Trend Micro who told me that Windows firewall should be turned off and their PC-cillin firewall profile should be set to "home network". Both desktop and laptop now have that configuration. I can now ping the router from the laptop which I couldn't do before however I am still not seeing shared resources between the computers.

Re: Unable to access network resources

Can you ping between the two machines by name? That's a mandatory step.

Let's see this for each machine.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt:

Type the following two commands:

nbtstat -n

ipconfig /all

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Re: Unable to access network resources

That looks OK, how about pinging between the machines both ways by name?

Turn off any firewalls for debugging. If the firewall is the problem, you'll have to configure it to allow access to "trusted zone" addresses. Note that some firewalls must be completely uninstalled to stop them from affecting your networking.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt for the following commands:

PING each remote computer by IP address, and if successful, PING by name. Open a command prompt as described above and type.

PING <ip address>
or
PING <computer name>

Where:
<ip address> - is the x.x.x.x IP address
<computer name> - is the computer name

A failure to PING is almost always a firewall configuration issue. Any failure to PING needs to be corrected before you go any farther.

Re: Unable to access network resources

Turned Trend Micro firewall off on both machines and attempted ping by ip address but no luck. Pinging from the desktop to the laptop the action times out. From the laptop to the desktop I get "destination host unreachable"

Re: Unable to access network resources

I am now able to ping each pc by IP address.
I am also able to ping from the laptop to the desktop by computer/netbios name however I'm getting a "could not find host" message when I try to hit the laptop from the desktop via computer name.

I am also now able to print from the laptop to the printer that I've got connected via IP directly to the router.

Also, though I am able to see the laptop in the list of pcs when I look at the workgroup from the desktop I am still not able to see the shared resources within it.

Re: Unable to access network resources

You still appear to have some sort of NETBIOS issue if you can't PING by name.

Check your Services are Started on all PCs:
  • Computer Browser
  • DHCP Client
  • DNS Client
  • Network Connections
  • Network Location Awareness
  • Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
  • Server
  • TCP/IP Netbios helper
  • Workstation

Note: You can check the services in Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services.

All of these services should be started, and their startup type should be automatic (or perhaps manual).

Re: Unable to access network resources

Checked the services you mentioned all are listed as started on both machines.
What do you make of the fact that I can ping by IP address or netbios name from the laptop pc to the desktop however the desktop can only ping the laptop by IP and yet not netbios name? Really appreciate your help.

Re: Unable to access network resources

Well, it's either a firewall issue or a problem with NETBIOS over TCP/IP, that's why were looking at the things we're looking at.

Do you see any networking related errors in the Event Log?

Took a look in the event viewer but didn't see anything related to networking.
