Repeated connection loss

I'm using windows XP SP2
running a wireless network with a belkin54g router.
There are four other users on the network.
We have a 4 mb/s cable broadband connection (ISP: Virgin Media)

We're having a problem in that all users are repeatedly being told there is limited or no connectivity to the network.

Either that or windows says the connection is fine but it doesn't work.

Repairing the connection works for a limited time (anything from a few seconds to a few hours) but the problem always comes back.

As always, all help is greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

J

Re: Repeated connection loss

Wired or wireless?

Let's see the full IPCONFIG.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt:

Type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Re: Repeated connection loss

Is anyone there using P2P applications? Too many simultaneous connections can cause the router to reset, resutling in loss of connection.

Re: Repeated connection loss

Stop the P2P applications and see if your router doesn't return to sanity.

Re: Repeated connection loss

I'll give that a go and see what happens.

I'm curious about this though

"Too many simultaneous connections can cause the router to reset, resutling in loss of connection."

Does that mean too many incoming connections from other p2p users (files we're sending)
or too many outgoing connections to other p2p users (files we're downloading)
or both
or does it mean something else entirely?

Re: Repeated connection loss

P2P applications open a host of connections which saturates the small tables in the router and results in a loss of connections. It's the nature of the beast.

Re: Repeated connection loss

Ah ok.

And is there any way of still running them and avoiding this problem or even minimising their effects?

Please review the Tech Support Forum Rules & Conduct, and you'll see we provide no support for P2P applications here at TSF.

Re: Repeated connection loss

im not familiar with belkin routers, however i believe,in most routers , you can monitor the traffic that passess thru for you to conclude that its heavy traffic causing it, you can also try to check the uptime of the router, if indeed it is rebooting by itself... and if your error counter is increasing, it can be because of the wire between router and modem. and dont forget, the provider's outside line can also be the culprit.
