[SOLVED] Can't get XP machine to network
Just added a wirless router and two Vista machines to my XP machine. The XP is wired and the two Vista are wireless. Internet connects fine on all machines. Vista machines can see each other and share files.
View Full Map in Network and Sharing Center on the Vista machines can see the XP machine but cannot access it - the curser over is a pointer not a hand. I can ping all machines from the others. I have added the LLTD patch to the XP machine. Also had to change the HKEY_Local_Machine\System...\Tcpip\Parameters IPEnableRouter to 1. Have checked all services on XP machine and it looks like all are started that need to be. Obviously, all machines have the same workgroup name set. The router can see all machines too. Linksys has a EasyLink Advisor and it show all machines and the IP addresses. Have spent several days scanning the net trying to figure this out but can't get it working. The Vista machines do not see the XP machine and the XP machine shows NOTHING in Network Neighborhood - not even itself. I have turned all firewalls off. I am sharing a printer and C drive on the XP. Sharing C drive on Vista. I use the adminstrator account on the XP but have tried setting up an account that matches the account on the Vista and it didn't work. When I access one of the Vista machines from the other on a different account, it prompts me for the user and password. Discovery is on. Also, file sharing on the Vista machines work fine. I can share from Vista to Vista. Here are some other things I have tried & noticed: NetBios over TCPIP is enabled but when I type ipconfig /all it shows as disabled. This is also the case on the Vista machines. Also, when I look at View Full Map in Network and Sharing Center on the Vista machines, they show a IPv6 address but the Router and the XP machine does not. According to LinkSys tech support, this does not matter. I've got the latest firmware version for the router. On the xp machine: I can ping the Vista machines. I can Start/Run \\xpcomputername. I cannot Start/Run \\xp ipaddress. Error: The network location cannot be reached. I cannot Start/Run \\vistacomputername. Same error. I cannot Start/Run \\vista ipaddress. Same error. On the Vista machines: I can ping the XP machine. I can Start/Run \\vistamachine. I can Start/Run \\visa ipaddress. I cannot Start\Run \\xpmachine. Error: Windows cannot access \\xpmachine I cannot Start\Run \\xp ipaddress. Same error. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!!! ![]() |

Re: Can't get XP machine to network
On the XP machine, check this.
Check your Services are Started on all PCs:
Note: You can check the services in Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services. All of these services should be started, and their startup type should be automatic (or perhaps manual). Let's see this from one of the Vista machines and the XP machine. Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt: Type the following two commands: nbtstat -n ipconfig /all Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter. Paste the results in a message here. If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Re: Can't get XP machine to network
Select Start > Settings > Network Connections.
Select Start > Settings > Network Connections.
In the properties of the Local Area Connection, please list all of the items that appear in the scrolling window labeled: This connections uses the following items. After that, post another IPCONFIG /ALL log.

Yes, NetBios over TCP/IP is selected.
There is not a Internet Connection Sharing on the Advanced tab. Only Windows Firelwall Setting button. Here are the properties checked: Client for Microsoft Networks Trend Micro Common Firewall Driver QoS Packet Scheduler File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks Microsoft TCP/IP version 6 Link-Layer Topology Discovery Responder Interent Protocal (TCP/IP) Listed but not checked are: NWLink NetBIOS NWLink IPX/SPS/NetBIOS Compatible Transport Protocal |

Re: Can't get XP machine to network
Changes that may help to increase the compatibility of Vista with older networking devices:
Disable the IP Helper service: 1. Hold the Windows key and type R, enter "services.msc" (without the quotes) and press Enter 2. Scroll down to the IP Helper service, right click on it and select Properties 3. In the dropdown box that says "Automatic" or "Manual", set it to Disabled and then click on "Apply" 4. Then click on "Stop" to stop the service from running in the current session 5. Click OK to exit the dialog Disable IPv6: 1. Hold the Windows key and type R, enter "ncpa.cpl" (without the quotes) and press Enter 2. Right click on each network connection and select "Properties" 3. Remove the checkmark from the box next to "Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6) 4. Click OK to exit the dialog NOTE: You should do this for each network connection. Disable the DHCP Broadcast Flag: Link: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/928233
The only program I'm aware of that currently relies on IPv6 is the new Windows Meeting Space. The first 2 changes will cause that program not to work - but will leave all of your normal (IPv4) connections unaffected. If it causes problems that you can't overcome, simply revert back to the original settings.

Re: Can't get XP machine to network
I did the above but I just Disabled the DHCP Broadcast Flag for the GUID that are for the network connections used.
Now the View Full Map in Network and Sharing Center on the Vista machines just show the IPv4 address on the Vista. Like before, it only showed a IPv4 address for the XP machine. Also, like before, I can see the XP machine but cannot access it - the curser over is a pointer not a hand. Still get: Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600] (C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp. C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator>nbtstat -n NetBT is not bound to any devices |

Re: Can't get XP machine to network
OK. I have sure learned a lot about networking though this entire ordeal.
I hope this will help someone else!!! I uninstalled all my Network Adapters from the Device Manager and Rebooted. That fixed my problem!!!!! Here is a summary. I don't know if all steps are needed, but this worked for me. On the wired XP: 1. Added the LLTD patch. 2. File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks installed. Most likely this is already done. 3. Microsoft TCP/IP version 6 installed. On the wireless Vista: 1. Network Discovery, File Sharing, and Public folder Sharing is ON. 2. Network set to Private. On all computers: 1. Worgroup the same. When I ran nbtstat -n, I got the error: NetBT is not bound to any devices I uninstalled all my Network Adapters from the Device Manager and Rebooted. I am very happy to have a working network!!! Praise the Lord!!! Thanks for you input on this problem! |
