They won't Network

Ok. First off i have 2 computers that don't have internet, one with vista one with xp.... I'm trying to network them using a router, a linksys wrt45g, but i also have a linksys hub... I have tried many things but none have worked. I just need some ideas of what i should try....I have the network drivers updated, I put the Microsoft LLTD Responder on xp, the computers have the same workgroup name...WORKGROUP, fire walls are off, and i have discovery on.

I Dunno wat else to try....HELP ME!

Re: They won't Network

Reset the Linksys router to factory defaults by holding the reset button for 15 seconds with power on.

Connect the two machines to the router with plain Ethernet patch cables, boot both of the computers.

Post the following information for each of the two computers.

Hold the Windows key and press R, type CMD to open a command prompt:

Type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Re: They won't Network

Well, the reason they won't network is pretty obvious! You are connected to two different subnets. You need to enable DHCP on the Vista machine.

Configure DHCP for Windows Vista.
  1. Click on the Start menu, and select Control Panel.
  2. Click on Network and Internet. (Skip this step if you do not see this Control Panel item.)
  3. Click on Network and Sharing Center.
  4. Click on Manage network connections.
  5. Right click on Local Area Connection and choose Properties. If Windows say it needs your permission to continue, click Continue.
  6. Select Internet Protocol Version 4(TCP/IPv4) and click Properties.
  7. Select Obtain an IP address automatically.
  8. Click OK to close the TCP/IP Properties window.
  9. Click OK to close the Local Area Connection Properties window.
  10. Click Close to close the Network Connections window.
  11. Click Close to close the Control Panel window.
  12. Restart your computer.

Re: They won't Network

The router probably won't show up in the XP without loading the patch for XP. That's not necessary for networking however. The XP machine is getting an IP address from the router.

Have you actually configured file/print sharing?

Re: They won't Network

Changes that may help to increase the compatibility of Vista with older networking devices:

Disable the IP Helper service:

1. Hold the Windows key and type R, enter "services.msc" (without the quotes) and press Enter
2. Scroll down to the IP Helper service, right click on it and select Properties
3. In the dropdown box that says "Automatic" or "Manual", set it to Disabled and then click on "Apply"
4. Then click on "Stop" to stop the service from running in the current session
5. Click OK to exit the dialog

Disable IPv6:

1. Hold the Windows key and type R, enter "ncpa.cpl" (without the quotes) and press Enter
2. Right click on each network connection and select "Properties"
3. Remove the checkmark from the box next to "Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6)
4. Click OK to exit the dialog

NOTE: You should do this for each network connection.

Disable the DHCP Broadcast Flag:

Link: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/928233
  1. Hold the Windows key and type R, enter regedit and press Enter.
  2. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
  3. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces\{GUID}
  4. In this registry path, click the (GUID) subkey to be updated.
  5. If the key DhcpConnForceBroadcastFlag does not exist, use the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD (32-bit) Value. In the New Value #1 box, type DhcpConnForceBroadcastFlag, and then press ENTER. If the key exists, skip this step.
  6. Right-click DhcpConnForceBroadcastFlag, and then click Modify.
  7. In the Value data box, type 0, and then click OK.
  8. Close Registry Editor.
NOTE: You should do this for each and every GUID subkey.

The only program I'm aware of that currently relies on IPv6 is the new Windows Meeting Space. The first 2 changes will cause that program not to work - but will leave all of your normal (IPv4) connections unaffected. If it causes problems that you can't overcome, simply revert back to the original settings.

Also, can you ping by name each computer from the other one? If not, you need to configure the firewalls to allow access. Since you have no Internet access involved, I'd simply disable the firewalls.

Re: They won't Network

Well, that's the first thing to fix, because it'll surely stop your networking cold. You need to configure the firewalls on the machines to allow file sharing.
