Re: My 2 comuters wont see each other.

Hi Antony, there are many things that could be causing this. I had this same problem when I built my new computer and put it on the network of my brother XP SP2 comp, here are a few ways to fix this on the Vista machine:

1. Make sure you have the connection as a "private network" to do this Right click the network icon on your taskbar (the bar with the start button) and click on "Network and Sharing Center". When this window appears you should see the pics of your network, right below this it should say "Network # (Private Network)" if not click "Customize" to the right. Select "Private Network" and then hit next. Finish and restart if necessary.
2. On the Network and Sharing Center window there are options, make sure "Network Discovery" is on, if it is not click the dropdown arrow to the right and turn it on, you will also want to make that the XP computer workgroups are the same (ie. Home, Work) you can change the workgroup here also.
3. Right below "Network Discovery" is "File Sharing" and "Public Folder Sharing" turn these both on. Restart if necessary.

This should fix your problem assuming that the XP machine is setup to share files. To turn on in XP go through the network setup and "connected to network" and "share files", always restart if you are asked to.

I hope this all fixes your problems, it did for me. If not post back and Im sure we can get it worked out. :D

Re: My 2 comuters wont see each other.

Please supply the following info, exact make and models of the equipment please.

Make and exact model of the broadband modem.
Make and exact model of the router.
Model numbers can usually be obtained from the label on the device.
Connection type, wired or wireless.
If wireless, encryption used, (none, WEP, WPA, or WPA2)
Make and model of your computer.
Version and patch level of Windows on all affected machines, i.e. XP-Home (or XP-Pro), SP1-SP2, Vista, etc.

Also, please give an exact description of your problem symptoms, including the exact text of any error messages.

On each computer, I'd also like to see this:

Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt:

Type the following two commands:

nbtstat -n

ipconfig /all

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Re: My 2 comuters wont see each other.

Turn off any firewalls for debugging. If the firewall is the problem, you'll have to configure it to allow access to "trusted zone" addresses. Note that some firewalls must be completely uninstalled to stop them from affecting your networking.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt for the following commands:

PING each remote computer by IP address, and if successful, PING by name. Open a command prompt as described above and type.

PING <ip address>
or
PING <computer name>

Where:
<ip address> - is the x.x.x.x IP address
<computer name> - is the computer name

A failure to PING is almost always a firewall configuration issue. Any failure to PING needs to be corrected before you go any farther.

Note: You can obtain the IP address and computer name of a computer by opening a command prompt (DOS window) and typing IPCONFIG /ALL. This should work for any Windows version. The IPCONFIG /ALL display will provide a wealth of useful information for debugging your network connection.

Check your Services are Started on all PCs:
  • Computer Browser
  • DHCP Client
  • DNS Client
  • Network Connections
  • Network Location Awareness
  • Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
  • Server
  • TCP/IP Netbios helper
  • Workstation

Note: You can check the services in Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services.

All of these services should be started, and their startup type should be automatic.

All computers should be in the same workgroup for computer browsing to function properly. File & Print Sharing has to be enabled on any computer you wish to share files or printers from. You also need to actually share the resource in question from My Computer, right click on the drive/printer/folder, and select sharing.

If you encounter difficulties accessing computers that are visible in Network Neighborhood, make sure the computer being accessed has an account with the same name/password as the system connecting to it uses to login.

While the default NetBIOS setting is correct for normal network configurations, it's possible for it to be altered, and it costs nothing to make sure it's correct. NETBIOS over TCP/IP must be enabled for normal network browsing.

I guess you have to be more selective in the advice you follow.
