My System

My computer says it's connected to the internet...

(I am not sure if I am getting the right audience, so I decided to post here as well)

Computer says it's connected to the internet...
but I cannot get on...

I think its my fault though
I recently installed Norton Internet Security 2008, and when I couldnt find a way to access the program folder to edit a few files (by modifying special permissions) I decided to give up and uninstall... I believe that I must have screwed something up. I was trying to stop Norton from running (so I could modify a file that was in use as it was running) and I think I changed an important setting that allows me to connect.

Here's what it's doing now:

The network icon in the system tray shows that I'm connected to the internet (as well as my home network)

I open IE7 or FF, and it cannot connect to the internet

I cannot access my Router Settings (normally by going to "routerlogin.com")
[it says address not vaild]

however my laptop (which I'm using now) is connecting fine via wireless.

I tried to connect directly to the modem, and it shows me connected to the internet, too, but it still doesnt work.

I don't know how to ping anything, but searching though the other posts, I figured I'd post my "ipconfig/all" results:

Re: My computer says it's connected to the internet...

See if this makes a difference, and post another IPCONFIG /ALL after running it.

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows Vista.

Start, Programs\Accessories and right click on Command Prompt, select "Run as Administrator" to open a command prompt.

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reset IPv4 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log

Reset IPv6 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log

Reboot the machine.

Re: My computer says it's connected to the internet...

I wanted to post my ipconfig results when I just have my desktop hooked up to my modem directly. Even with this setup, I can't connect. I have tried pinging my router, and several other sites (with IP address and Name) and it works fine.

I just tried pinging several IP and websites (simple ones like Yahoo.com and MSN.com) and it wont work from my laptop (which if you remember I am using right now, and is connected wirelessly to my router). but it works fine from my desktop (connected via ethernet to the same router)

Re: My computer says it's connected to the internet...

That IPCONFIG shows a good connection to a router using the wired connection on the Vista machine.

When you connect directly to the modem, you are remembering to power cycle the modem, right?

Re: My computer says it's connected to the internet...

when I directly connect it to the modem, I turn it off completely, wait about 2-5 minutes, then turn it back on. It goes through its self check, and all of the correct lights come onm. My computer then says it is connected, but no programs are able to find it... its not just my web browsers.

Re: My computer says it's connected to the internet...

What is the make/model of the modem?

When you go through the reset of the modem and connect directly, I'd like to see the IPCONFIG /ALL at that point.

Re: My computer says it's connected to the internet...

I am at work at the moment, i can't get the info, but I know it is the standard ethernet modem for Bellsouth DSL in S. FL. if that helps... (its a small black basic looking modem.) The Router is by Netgear, but again, I dont have that info.

Also, to re-itterate. My internet is working fine with my Laptop. I haven't tried connecting my Laptop to my Router or modem directly, but I DO know that everything works when i'm connected wirelessly. so I assume the communication from the Modem to the Router to the Computers isnt the problem.

right?

Re: My computer says it's connected to the internet...

no, i understand. And I'm not the one to pretend like I know what I'm doing. It's just, my assumption comes from the reality that my internet is working fine through my router while using my Laptop...

Now, I've tested the Laptop while directly connected to the Router and while directly to the modem, and both situations work fine.

regardless

My Modem is:
Westell
C90-690030-06

My Router is:
Netgear
WGR614 v6

FYI, I am using my Laptop while directly connected to my modem atm.

Re: My computer says it's connected to the internet...

Changes that may help to increase the compatibility of Vista with older networking devices:

Disable the IP Helper service:

1. Go to Start and type in "services.msc" (without the quotes) and press Enter
2. Scroll down to the IP Helper service, right click on it and select Properties
3. In the dropdown box that says "Automatic" or "Manual", set it to Disabled and then click on "Apply"
4. Then click on "Stop" to stop the service from running in the current session
5. Click OK to exit the dialog

Disable IPv6:

1. Go to Start and type in "ncpa.cpl" (without the quotes) and press Enter
2. Right click on each network connection and select "Properties"
3. Remove the checkmark from the box next to "Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6)
4. Click OK to exit the dialog

NOTE: You should do this for each network connection.

Disable the DHCP Broadcast Flag:

Link: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/928233
  1. Go to Start and type in regedit and press Enter.
  2. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
  3. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces\{GUID}
  4. In this registry path, click the (GUID) subkey to be updated.
  5. If the key DhcpConnForceBroadcastFlag does not exist, use the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD (32-bit) Value. In the New Value #1 box, type DhcpConnForceBroadcastFlag, and then press ENTER. If the key exists, skip this step.
  6. Right-click DhcpConnForceBroadcastFlag, and then click Modify.
  7. In the Value data box, type 0, and then click OK.
  8. Close Registry Editor.
NOTE: You should do this for each and every GUID subkey.

The only program I'm aware of that currently relies on IPv6 is the new Windows Meeting Space. The first 2 changes will cause that program not to work - but will leave all of your normal (IPv4) connections unaffected. If it causes problems that you can't overcome, simply revert back to the original settings.

Okay. I did all of the steps above, and I restarted. It doesn't appear to be working still. IE, FF, Windows Live Mail, or Myspace Messenger still cannot connect.

My System

Re: My computer says it's connected to the internet...

Ok...
I attempted to traceback my steps to see what originally went wrong and when. I had already attempted to restore my computer to a previous date, but it wouldn't boot. So, the earliest I could successfully restore to was the moment after I installed Norton Internet Security 2008 (after I uninstalled 2007)

Now, originally, I uninstalled Norton 08 after messing with settings, and the combination of both must have screwed something up.

So, after doing what you have suggested (and it hasnt seemed to work) I thought about re-installing Norton 07, hoping that maybe whatever setting I changed would be corrected. My plan was to then uninstall Norton with out messing with any setting this time. Interestingly enough, when I opened the installer, it asked me to uninstall Norton. I did so, and hoped that it would work. It didn't.

So, I un-did the steps you told me to do (with the IPHelper, etc) and re-started. Still nothing.

So, i decided to re-install Norton 07, and as it was installing it said "Installation Failed, collecting data for more information. This may take a few minutes". After it finished I couldnt find it in the "Control Panel > Uninstall Programs" list, so I re-booted.

Norton came up with errors apon re-boot, saying there were missing files that was required. So, I went to the program list again, and still no Norton. I started the isntaller for Norton again, and it simply tried to install again, not un-install.
I apptempted the process of installing and uninstalling until giving up from it always failing to completely install...

SOOO
I was wondering if Norton's failure to successfully install will give any insite to the solution.

My drastic solution is to purchase a 500GB Harddrive, back up all of my data, and restore to factory settings (completely starting over)...

Re: My computer says it's connected to the internet...

The only insight I draw from this is one I've had for years, stop using the buggy Norton products! I finally got tired of fixing their corruption and have not used their products for years.

My System

Re: My computer says it's connected to the internet...

I avoid Norton as much as possible. But at work, people swear by it, and it is forced apon me. I do enjoy NIS's "Identity Safe", which automatically logs into the websites i store into it (Like hotmail, myspace, fedex, unfiction, this forum, etc) it's extremely convenient, and dramatically more effective than simply "saving passwords"...
I installed 2007 at home thinking it had it, but it didn't... I made the mistake of installing more than one Norton Product on my computer in any given lifetime...

So what can I do about my internet? Now it's not even showing me as connected to the internet like it did before, nor will Vista identify my network as "igloozion", just "Unidentified Network 4"...

Re: My computer says it's connected to the internet...

Try that stack repair one more time now before I throw my hands up in despair.

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows Vista.

Start, Programs\Accessories and right click on Command Prompt, select "Run as Administrator" to open a command prompt.

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reset IPv4 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log

Reset IPv6 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log

Reboot the machine.
