xp/vista networking

this is somewhat odd and I have read the other posts on networking and feel that overall i understand the setup but for some reason still having problems so sorry if asking redundant stuff.

just added to actiontec m1000 adsl/netgear wifi router with fujitsu lifebook win xp pro another fujitsu laptop but vista business.

xp system is ethernet connection and vista is wireless

originally network was working ok. everything from xp system was viewable and shareable on vista sys but not reverse as had not set any file sharing settings on vista sys.(also strange because read that if no file sharing settings on vista computers can't see each other)

now, cannot see xp(or vista) system on network. have autodetect on and workgroup is the same.

have been tinkering with router to accommodate emule but no luck. i don't know if this has had any affect. currently turned both windows firewalls off to check that front but no change. maybe preinstalled symantec internet security is causing problems but i think it has been on since the beginning, so what caused the change? if i could see the xp sys from vista sys why now nothing? very strange. have read many of the other posts on networking problems. makes me want to downgrade my vista system to xp, which i have cds to do.

thanks for assistance

Re: xp/vista networking

also, another change was to add a few devices to my bluetooth manager, my cellphone and mouse. don't think this is significant though

Re: xp/vista networking

On each of the systems, let's see this.

Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt:

Type the following two commands:

nbtstat -n

ipconfig /all

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Are the last two with both machines connected to the router and booted at the same time?

Re: xp/vista networking

Well, both of them think they're the master browser. This happens when they can't see each other on the network.

Can you ping both ways by name?

Re: xp/vista networking

ping from vista system (192.168.1.3) to xp system (192.168.1.2) is good
pring from xp to vista is "request timed out"

Re: xp/vista networking

Try disabling the firewall on the Vista machine and see if that helps. If so, we'll figure out how to configure the firewall properly.

Re: xp/vista networking

both firewalls are turned off in this scenario, which also leads to my next set of discussions about what the best setup for defense are. my router has a firewall but i don't know what the firewalls on the machines should look like.

Re: xp/vista networking

Well, mine look gone! I use the router's firewall, and a current AV and spyware scanner. If you aren't going to a lot of suspect sites, this will normally do it. Some folks like a software firewall monitoring the outgoing connections, I've never found it necessary.

Re: xp/vista networking

Well, failure to ping is almost always a firewall issue. I'd find the firewall component that's blocking the pings and disable it.
