Port Foward Problems -Netgear WGT624-DSL
I am finding it IMPOSSIBLE to get a port forwarded all of a sudden. Up untill a few days ago I had port forwarded on this connection for about a year with no major problems.
So anyways as I said up until a few days ago ports forwarded just fine. Then I upgraded from Comodo firewall V2 to V3. Everything was still running just fine. Then all of a sudden no matter what I could not forward a port. I eventually disabled Comodo(and deleted it from my system for testing purposes),disabled windows firewall(which has been disabled since day 1 of this PC), and disabled the Linksys routers firewall. At this time I was using a linksys router(in the end model number will not be important), and not the Netgear. After days of troubleshooting and dealing with Linksys tech support(who said the router would need to be sent in for repairs) I hooked up the old Netgear WGT624 which i had never got around to changing out for the Linksys. I thought this surley would fix my port forward issues, but it did not. So I got the Netgear configured correctly to where my PC had internet, as well as the laptops on the network had working internet. Forwarded a port, but still did not work. So I disabled the trendmicro firewall in the Netgear router, and left my PC completely vulnerable by not having a firewall installed.(yes I am aware how dangerous this is). After some research I found out about bridging my DSL Modem(Speedstream1400). So i tried that in connection with my Netgear. Logged into the Speedstream modem and found 3 PPPoE settings: (This was the default setting and has been used for the past year) PPP is on the modem. This is the normal mode for this modem when connected to a single computer. In this mode, the PPP session is initiated from the modem. Gateways and routers should work in this mode but their configuration may have to be changed to do so (e.g., you may need to have the gateway/router IP address changed to 192.168.1.1). (CURRENT MODE)PPP is on the computer. This mode is normally used if you need to run a PPPoE client on your PC. This mode can be used with a gateway or router which initiates a PPPoE session. To return to the DSL modem user interface you will need to directly connect your PC to the modem without any gateway or router between the modem and the PC. Bridged Mode (PPPoE is not used). This mode must be used if you are connecting to a non-PPPoE network. Selecting this mode will cause the modem to automatically restart. So I have tried the second and third option but the port refuses to forward properly. I am out of ideas. Could it be related to a windows service? I have a few I dont need disabled, but turned on nearly every service for the sake of troubleshooting. At this point i am exhausted and hope I can find some one here with an answer. Thanks for all the time spent reading this and thank you in advance to any response. Oh and if this by chance is in the wrong forum, my apologies. |

Re: Port Foward Problems -Netgear WGT624-DSL
Have you gotten the bridge mode working with the user name/password for the account configured in the Netgear router? If so, there should be no port forwarding implications of the Speedstream modem.
I'd visit www.portforward.com for port forwarding instructions for your router and application. FWIW, I don't run any firewalls here, just the router's NAT layer other firewall attributes like SPI.

Thank you for all the information none the less, but I resolved the issue. I suppose when you read further I feel short on providing information, but may see why as well. Originally I was running a Linksys router when the problem arised. I spoke with a linksys tech rep through live chat. I asked if it was possible that certain disabled windows services could play a part in the problem. She assured me this was not the case, however after I played with various services enabling several i disabled, I came to realize that some of the services I disabled by mistake where indeed the problem and not my router or dsl modem. I never suspected the modem due to the fact I never needed to change the PPoE settings in the past to get a successful port forward. Also I had tried so many things that I lost track of what I had done up until that point. I apoligize for wasting your time and thank you for your effort. Happy holidays! |
