[SOLVED] Toshiba Satellite Pro P200 15W internet (xp/vista) problems
I have a TOSHIBA SATELLITE P200 15W laptop (Core2Duo 2Ghz, 2GB DDR2, Ati Mobility Radeon HD 2600, 2x200GB HDD, Intel Wireless WiFi™ Link 4965AGN network), that came with Windows Vista Bussiness Spanish.
I have loads of problems with the internet connection. 1.winXP-sp2 At first, i installed WinXP-sp2 along with the drivers that i found on the toshiba homepage for my model. 1.1 When connected through the LAN card, directly with the LAN jack (not through router), the connection runs smoothly. 1.2 I also have a Siemens Gisaset SE361 WLAN router with the firmware updated because at first it would disconnect the internet connection in abut every half an hour, needing a reset and re-configuration to work again. When connected via router->wireless or router->LAN card, the internet lags: when navigatin to a page, it has a 4-6 seconds of idleing with the message "finding www.[...].com" in the IE status bar, when the upload or download speed in zero or close, after which it loads allmost instantly, download speed jumping to 60-80-100.. When navigating in the current domain, it runs allmost smoothly, without the lag. But when going on a new one, it happens again. To note that on any other computer with XP-sp2 that i tried the internet via router(LAN or WLAN), this doesnt happen. it works smoothly. 2. win VISTA I then installed VISTA Bussiness on the second HDD, hoping the problem will go away. (its not the vista that came with the laptop, it's a diferent one with original license - english). Installed the drivers from the toshiba page for vista, since they don't come separately on the dvd recovery disk (bummer). Via router, the connection was great for a week or so. It may or may not be a coincidence, but when i cought a virus (REG/Zapchast.trojan), a different more fustrating problem apeared. When surfing, i often get the page that says: Quote:
I first thought that it was because of the virus. I THINK i managed to delete it myself using HijackThis and following a buch of tutorials and databases of legal/ilegal processes and stuff. Yes SecurityCenter and Updates were disabled (i still had ESET SmartSecurity installed though), but i enabled them after deleting the virus. I think i deleted it because i see no more curious lines in HijackThis, the antivirus does not detect the a.bat when windows starts nomore. BUT the problem persists. note: i did not try connecting directly from the LAN card (no router) in Vista. Help would be apreciated. Any further information you need, please let me know. ================================================ Vista HijackThis LOGs: I've attached the before cleaning and after HJT logs. I've deteleted the following: O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Windows Updater] WinUpdater.exe O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Windows Updater] WinUpdater.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [StartCCC] "E:\Program Files\ATI Technologies\ATI.ACE\Core-Static\CLIStart.exe" Also attached a fresh HJT scan. |

Re: Toshiba Satellite Pro P200 15W internet (xp/vista) problems
Start, Run, devmgmt.msc
Under Network adapters, please tell me all the devices listed. Also, are there any devices anywhere in the Device Manager display with yellow ? or ! displayed? Also, I'd like to see this. Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt: Type the following command: IPCONFIG /ALL Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter. Paste the results in a message here. If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Re: Toshiba Satellite Pro P200 15W internet (xp/vista) problems
I find it very curious that both the XP and Vista machines have the same IP address, how did that happen? Were these connected at the same time?
Let's try a stack repair on each machine. For the Vista machine. TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows Vista. Start, Programs\Accessories and right click on Command Prompt, select "Run as Administrator" to open a command prompt. Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog Reset IPv4 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log Reset IPv6 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log Reboot the machine. For the XP machine. TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows XP with SP2. Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt: Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ip reset reset.log Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog Reboot the machine. I'd then like to see this for each machine. Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt: Type the following two commands: nbtstat -n ipconfig /all Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter. Paste the results in a message here. If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Re: Toshiba Satellite Pro P200 15W internet (xp/vista) problems
Before I paste what you asked me to, I'd like to emphasise that i have both VISTA and XP-sp2 on the SAME machine. On my laptop described in the first post, that is. That's why, I believe, they have the same IP.
I also like to state again that i am runing the connection through the router described in my first post. On VISTA, after doing what you told me to and restarting, i noticed that the nbtstat -n command doesn't work. See in the paste below. I tried runing the CMD as administrator, and yes, my account is of administrator type. in XP, the command worked. here are the pastes: VISTA: Microsoft Windows [Version 6.0.6000] Copyright (c) 2006 Microsoft Corporation. So, when connecting to your forum, to this specific thread, it went like this: It took 67 seconds to load this page: 29 seconds - IE status bar: Looking upwww.techsupportforum.com/... 38 seconds -IE stats bar: Waiting for http://www... In all this time, DUMeter reported the DL speed to be 0.0kB/sec. And after, it jumped to like 60kB or something, and loaded instantly. I'll paste my ROUTER SETTINGS in my next post ASAP, if it may be of help. [i repeat: on any other PC/laptop the wired/wireless connection via router works great. on this laptop, the direct connection [not via router] works great.] |

Re: Toshiba Satellite Pro P200 15W internet (xp/vista) problems
I think that's probably because you logged in booted into one version of Windows, then booted and tryed to login to the router from the other version.
I can't imagine why NETBIOS over TCP/IP is disabled on the Vista machine, the stack reset doesn't do that. I've used that exact command sequence many times. Here's a tutorial to enable it: http://ecross.mvps.org/howto/netbt.htm

Re: Toshiba Satellite Pro P200 15W internet (xp/vista) problems
Well, i have enabled NetBios over TCP/IP as you asked. On both the Local Area Connection (which is not in use), and the Wireless Network Connection.
But still no nbtstat -n . . . Even after a restart. The same "failed to access NetBT driver -- NetBT may not be loaded. I've noticed that if i type nbtstat with no parameters, i get the parameter list... but on anything i try, it's the same message. Any idea why? Might have been the virus? (it also disabled the Vista Security Center and the Vista Updates services, which i managed to enable via the "services" menu in Computer Management...) Do you think this may be the main problem? Or maybe i should just do a clean install on both my windows..es.. ? |

I suspect that you have removed something necessary for NETBIOS with the virus removal process.
Obviously, something is preventing NetBT from loading...

Re: Toshiba Satellite Pro P200 15W internet (xp/vista) problems
Happy New Year everyone!
My problem isn't solved, didnt have the time to reinstall, though i'd wish i'd have another choice. I dont get what's with NetBios, in Vista. But is it the problem? If its not, is it bad? But ignoring the NetBios thing in Vista, in XP i have problems also, and the Netbt command is working. So if you checked out the results and anything, do you have an idea of how to fix this? If not, please tell me so i can quit struggling to resolve it. I'll reinstall my windows after my exams are over (though i fear that i'll have the same problems). Reasons: Why is it working smoothly with the direct connection to the internet via cable, and why is it having these annoying problems when connected via Router? Why doesn't my roommate and anybody else that came here have these problems though he's connected via same router? If i would to use the process of elimination, i'd eliminate the router as being a problem (it works fine on anything else), i'd eliminate the internet configuration and LAN card (as the connection works fine when connected directly and on any other LANs or WLANs (ive tested it back home and in different hotspots)... AND THAT leaves me with nothing to put the blame on! So what the heck is going on? Please respond. Thanks |

Re: Toshiba Satellite Pro P200 15W internet (xp/vista) problems
@sekura:
I've the same router and had the same problems. You need to do two things on your router: - disable firewall - set the DNS servers of your provider. Unfortunately, and this is a bug of the firmware, when your PCs receive the IP from the router, they receive the wrong DNS (even if set) so you'll have to set them manually on each machine. This should solve your problems. |

Re: Toshiba Satellite Pro P200 15W internet (xp/vista) problems
I really doubt that the router is giving you the wrong DNS address. The IPCONFIG shows that it's pointing to the router, which is correct. Even if this were true, the right place to fix it would be to manually override the DNS setting in the server, not for every machine on the network.

Re: Toshiba Satellite Pro P200 15W internet (xp/vista) problems
I wasn't clear enough. Let me rephrase it.
From my experience, I've seen that there are some DNS queries the router can't resolve (even with the latest firmware). So the solution I found was to set manually on each machine my ISP's DNS servers. An example of a DNS query that doesn't work is any DNS SIP SRV record, such as _sip._udp.YourVoipProvider.com. Try it yourself and let me know if your Siemens SE361 can resolve it. |

I don't see anything in his posts to suggest this kind of issue. You're looking at a pretty specific example that doesn't seem to apply here.
Occam's Razor: Of two equivalent theories or explanations, all other things being equal, the simpler one is to be preferred. In other words, when you hear hoof beats, think horses, not zebras.

Re: Toshiba Satellite Pro P200 15W internet (xp/vista) problems
@johnwill: maybe it doesn't seem to apply for someone who doesn't have *this* router.
The problems sekura described (poor download speeds, internet lagging) I had them. Tried many different things, but only when solved this particular DNS resolving problem everything started working as expected. I opened a ticket with Siemens but I'm waiting their answer for more than a week. |

Re: Toshiba Satellite Pro P200 15W internet (xp/vista) problems
Thanks guys.
Eventually i fixed it in XP, but still don't exactly know the causes. I mingled with the router settings. It might have been the fact that i chose to copy my MAC to the ROUTER, and then apply Mac filtering for my mac. Not really shure. Anyway, disabled them, hidden my SSID, and other minor tweaks i think, and finaly got it going. I finaly moved and now i use another router. New windows instalation also, and everything is going swell. Thanks for your care |
