Ive searched around... XP / Networking Issue.

Ok, so ive recently moved into my new apt.

But im still having problems with my port forwarding. JohnWill was helping me when i was behind a Gateway/Router and a wireless router...

Now i have another problem. Im connected directly to the cable modem this time as i have yet to buy a router. Yet, when i allow an exception in windows firewall, the port still has "Stealth" status when i check it at ShieldsUp!, and when i turn windows firewall completely off, it has a "Closed" status.

What gives? I know comcast isnt blocking the ports, they are far too obscure, and there is no reason for them to be blocking them in the first place.

My computer :
  • AMD FX55 2.6
  • 1 Gig of Ram
  • Windows XP w/ SP2

My network,
  • Unsure of the make Cable Modem
  • Onboard Ethernet Port, (Marvell Yukon Gigabit Ethernet Controller)

Thank you for any suggestions.

Turn the modem over, the model should be on the sticker on the bottom.

Since turning off the firewall changes the status, it sounds like something is being done wrong in the configuration of the port.

its a Ambit SpeedStream U10C018.

I guess it could be something im doing in windows firewall, but i followed the directions for forwarding ports to the letter. Also, why would the port status be closed when windows firewall is off? it seems microsoft is forcing it to be on or something.

The port is closed unless some application responds to an incoming request. I'd guess that whatever application you are trying to use isn't looking at that port.

Re: Ive searched around... XP / Networking Issue.

im having a hard time understanding how a connection can be possible, if the port doesnt accept inbound traffic. If its in stealth, doesnt that stop any inbound traffic?

Yes, the stealth isn't what I'm addressing. When you remove the firewall, the "closed" indicates there is no application fielding the requests.

I figured we'd fix one problem at a time.
