Help with new wireless connection

As u may remember we recently got an internet upgrade, apparently with wireless me being skeptical but thats not the prob though, its speed.

Ok im on the tiscali 8MB package with a thompson modem:

(on the taskbar animation it says "Local area connetion" < err huh?? "speed: 100mbps" lol it aint that fast xD and "connected" obv)

SSID: Speedtouch 0059EB
WEP HEX: 637DB638D4
Connected using: SiS 900 PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter

Ok so yeah its 8mb or supposed to be, at the moment im not on the machine as stated on the "my system" thingy, im on my old 1.

Pent4 1 gig ram gforce 440mx lol (that reminds me...the 3 major pc factors dont effect the internet speed do they? ram, processor, gfc card etc?)

Now at the moment im connected to the computer directly off the white ethernet cable as stated above, did some speed tests to try it out (limited coz this comp wont install flash lol) on this particular website:

http://www.broadbandchoices.co.uk/speed-test.asp

And the fastest i seem to get is 4.4mbs or about 580kbps download speed...when it should be 1mbps download speed websites tell me...uhh whats going on?

Now on the site i checked the "wireless" thingy even though im connected via ethernet, did this matter? nope. Coz it doesnt make much of a difference if un/or checked.

So i was wondering...since i cant get on speedtest.com becoz of the flash, are there any proper online internet speed testing sites i can go on? that dont require flash?

Then again that mite not make a diff...coz the max download speed i have is 580kbps so far when on numurous sites benchmarks state "1meg". (or if it isnt 1meg download for 8meg internet then wats it ment to be?)

Should i complain to tiscalli? Or are we doing something wrong?

Another thing...we need it on two other computers, apparently since i was at school at the time my mom didnt ask the man which particular USB dongle thingy we need, and the internet is confusing me, so can anyone plz help me as to which or what kind of USB dongle we need to get? or PCI card or somthing?

Many thanks in advance :)

The speeds quoted by the ISP are maximum speeds, read the terms of service that you agreed to when you signed up.

Re: Help with new wireless connection

Ummm ok, but still...LESS than 50% the desired speed? dude...

Ok some more info:

Computer modem, cables, and connections are brand new and working
No extension cables
Connected directly via ethernet cable
Speedtest done with routed clear ports with 0 congestion

Ok now i was wondering...how can i tell how far we are from this "telephone exchange" thingy? Since that would help.

Thing is though...with my 2 meg package, we got substantially more than the desired speed, for example the peak i had with 2meg package was 288kpbs (lol before than weird 5meg appeared) so this is weird.

Ok its also to do with how many people are on the service yeah? Ok cool...so maybe i should see what speeds I get a different times of the day...say 4am or 3am and try it then...and if its below 50% its worth complaing then eh?

It supposed to download at around so other people have told me, 800-950kbps which would be awesome, but seeing how its around 540 is a considerable loss...

Well i'll try in the early hours, report back hear, then complian lol.

Ok now what about these dongle things...can someone help me on which 1's to get? Seriously im stumped on it...

Re: Help with new wireless connection

Are you looking for a wired or wireless connection? What is the exact make/model of the computer or computers you plan on using these with? Laptops, desktops? Free PCI slots, free PCMCIA slot?

Re: Help with new wireless connection

Well, what is the exact make/model of the router? Is it an 802.11n model, or 802.11g?

Here's a whole list of 802.11g models: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...nd&Order=PRICE
