ip address problem
Hi everyone I am new to the forum and would like some help with my ip address.
I work for an airline and travel a lot, to many countries. I always take my laptop and connect to the internet from my hotel in whichever country I happen to be in that week. Now the problem. I live in the UK and like to listen to my local radio and tv station online. However when I am abroad the stations seem to be blocked to users from abroad. Is ther anyway I can "trick" the stations into thinking I am still at home(UK)? Many thanks Chris. PS these stations are free to listen to in the UK so I am not tring to obtain paid content. Chris |

Re: ip address problem
Hi Chris,
I think you might have a couple of options here. The first, and probably easiest, is to use a proxy server within the UK while you're in those places. You could set one up on a home computer with a password, and use that. This method should work with both winamp (and probably other standalone media players) and a plain browser connection. The second option is to set up a VPN on your home network and connect to it remotely while away. A VPN is essentially a way into a LAN from a remote location- as far as the computers you're connecting to are concerned, you might as well be sitting on a computer at home. If this sounds like a better route for you, I could try to dig up some of the free options for that, but this one takes more work than a plain old proxy.

Re: ip address problem
Hi Fox.
Thanks for your very prompy reply. Would it be possible to run through the method of setting up the 1st of the possible options. I am fairly computer literate but by no means an expert. Thanks once again for your help. Kind regards Chris (in Sydney Australia at the moment) |

Re: ip address problem
You'll need a host computer to act as the server that stays on whenever you need to connect through it. You'll also need to run a proxy server program on that computer.
One such program is AnalogX's proxy server. I suggest downloading it and looking through the readme for an idea of what you'll need to get it working.
