Connected, but no net activity?
I know a considerable amount about computers networking etc. and this one even has me stumped.
Here's the situation, I was fixing a friends computer, finished, went back onto my system, when to run, msconfig, startup, and disabled the 1 program that wasn't necessary. Following this i went and changed it to normal startup, just to see what would happen, figuring that i could just switch it back. This, evidently, didn't work. During this switching process, and after clicking restart, a box popped up saying there had been alot of hardware changes, and that i needed to validate my windows. I didn't really care, as it is a simple phone call, but when my computer came up, i connected to my net (which actually connected), double clicked on mozilla, and it doesn't display the page. I also can't connect to AIM, steam, etc. and the net just isn't working, even though it says it is connected. I checked the send/recieve packets on the net and it was at an extremely low number after a few minutes (maybe 3-5), only at around 30. I have ran virus scan, checked drivers, updated everything, etc. and have kept very good care of my computer in that regard. The only thing i still haven't tried is DL'ing the patch for SP 2 which was released with the low connectivity bug, and i wont be able to try it till tommorow. Any ideas? Any comments? Everything and anything would be appreciated, thanks in advance. |

Re: Connected, but no net activity?
Hi garebear09 and welcome to TSF !
Go to start => run and type ipconfig /renew See if it changes anything. Type cmd then type ipconfig in the command prompt and post a screenshot of what you see. Try to ping a website using its url then using its ip address : ping www.google.com ping 64.233.183.99 If the latter works and not the first then there's some problem with your DNS server. You should phone your ISP and ask them for the ip address of their DNS server so you can set it manually in your network properties. Karen's Net monitor can help you diagnose your issue. I'll ask a moderator to move this thread to the networking support section where you'll have better help.

Please check the name and try again. And after pinging 64.233.183.99 i got Pinging XX with 32 bytes of data: Reply from 64.233.183.99: Bytes=32 time=145ms TTL=242 Reply from 64.233.183.99: Bytes=32 time=145ms TTL=242 Reply from 64.233.183.99: Bytes=32 time=145ms TTL=242 Reply from 64.233.183.99: Bytes=32 time=145ms TTL=242 Ping Statistics for : Packets: sent = 4, recieved = 4, lost = 0 (0% loss), Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds: Minimum = 140ms, maximum = 145ms, Average = 141ms That's it all typed out as i couldn't take a SS from that computer. Re: Connected, but no net activity?
You are missing the DNS Server address, which would explain why you don't get DNS resolution.
Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt: Type the following command: IPCONFIG /ALL Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter. Paste the results in a message here. If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Re: Connected, but no net activity?
Windows IP Configuration
Host Name: Dennis Primary DNS Suffix: Node Type: Broadcast IP routing Enabled: No WINS Proxy Enabled: No Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection: Media State: Media Disconnected Description: Intel<R> PRO/100 VE Network Connection Physical Address: 00-01-80-50-71-49 This is my laptop computer, being connected with the same enternet (ie router, cords, etc.) so could i possibly look up the DNS adress on here? |

Re: Connected, but no net activity?
okay well after digging a bit farther now that i have more time...
i have noticed that my connection is set up to acquire the DNS adress automatically, and always has. Also, on my desktop i have tried re-doing the connection, and adjusting ALL setting to the EXACT same on here, and it still doesn't work. Could this be a hardware issue? Also, i went ahead and took the time to look up the SBC Yahoo DSL internet DNS servers, and assigning them to the DNS server as primary and alternate (there was only 4) and then re-trying the connection, which did not work either. |

Re: Connected, but no net activity?
You mention changing the attached machine, did you power cycle the modem to do this? You MUST power cycle a broadband modem if you change the attached device.

Re: Connected, but no net activity?
No i didn't, i haven't even heard of that to be honest. Literally, i unplugged the ethernet cable from my desktop computer, and plugged it into my laptop, and it worked. Did NOTHING else.

Re: Connected, but no net activity?
What is the make/model of the modem? If it's a modem/router, that will work, but a plain broadband modem has to be power cycled (reset) to allow a device with a different MAC address to connect.

Re: Connected, but no net activity?
I don't know if that modem will connect without a power cycle or not, but it sure won't hurt to do that. :) It does have an internal configuration web interface at 192.168.0.1, so any router that has a base address of 192.168.0.x will have to be reconfigured to work with this modem. This is a modem/router, so if any port forwards are used, I'd put the 5100 in bridge mode.

Re: Connected, but no net activity?
Well i can't go to that adress for some reason, keeps saying it can't find the page.
And also, the connection is already bridged, and it was before hand as well, and it still doesn't work. Any other ideas? |

Re: Connected, but no net activity?
If the connection is bridged, the connecting machine has to have PPPoE configured for it to work.
I suggest resetting the modem to factory defaults, then connecting the machine to it and see if you have more luck.

Re: Connected, but no net activity?
Well i am almost 100% certain that it has NOTHING to do with the modem itself.
The same modem, etc. works perfectly fine on the laptop sitting right next to my desktop, so i think what happened is that whenever i revalidated my windows the SP2 config. messed with my TCP/IP stacking and corrupted it, which in that case it's a simple case in which i'll find out tommorow. Dunno yet, still trying things. We'll see. Any more ideas? |
