Challenges with Wireless internet TOSHIBA, TECRA M5

Hello Sir,

I own TOSHIBA TECRA M5 Laptop and WIN XP is the operating system. I have another desktop which is a non-brand one.

I have challenges with my Toshiba Laptop in terms going online usiing wireless internet.

The wireless internet switch is always ON for the Laptop and when I try to go online using the router I get a RED X on system tray wireless internet icon and it never recognizes any wireless networks. So I always has to go wired only to go online.

I don't have any problems with my non-brand desktop with respect to wireless internet connection.

I am not sure what's the problem. Do I need to install any drivers to make it wireless enabled ??

Can some one help me on this one ? Please let me know if you need more details on this one..

Thanks & Regards
CPR.

Re: Challenges with Wireless internet TOSHIBA, TECRA M5

Please supply the following info, exact make and models of the equipment please.

Make and model of the broadband modem.
Make and model of the router.
If wireless, encryption used, (none, WEP, WPA, or WPA2)
Version and patch level of Windows on all affected machines, i.e. XP-Home (or XP-Pro), SP2, Vista, etc.

Also, please give an exact description of your problem symptoms, including the exact text of any error messages.

On any problem computer, I'd also like to see this:

Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt:

Type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Finally, please do this.

Start, Run, devmgmt.msc

Under Network adapters, please tell me all the devices listed. Also, are there any devices anywhere in the Device Manager display with yellow ? or ! displayed?

Make and model of the router: Linksys, BEFW11S4 VER.4

Encryption used : I did use the key, I am not sure which type of encryption.

Re: Challenges with Wireless internet TOSHIBA, TECRA M5

From the display you posted, I'd say you have the modem connected to one of the router's LAN/Network ports, and not the WAN/Internet port. Please check that and report back.

Sorry about that. When I checked my configurations my computer was wired to access Internet. Following should be okay since I took them when I was trying to connect online through router.

They are:

Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-13-02-98-75-BD

C:\Documents and Settings\chimatp>

I have also added three images.

Image - Error message for wireless network.png - Let you know the error message I was getting when I was trying to browse the available internet connections

Image - Network adaptors.png, display the network adaptors status

Image - System tray.png, shows the RED X on wireless internet icon

Hope this will help you to address the challenge. Thank you very much for looking into this one.

Thanks & Regards
CPR.

Re: Challenges with Wireless internet TOSHIBA, TECRA M5

Well, you have a bunch of stuff wrong there.

#1, you have ICS enabled, you clearly don't want that. Here's a guide to disable it: Disabling Internet Connection Sharing

#2, if you plan on sharing files/printers with any other system on the network, the note type of peer-peer won't work. Here's the Microsoft MS-KB article on fixing that: MS-KB - Fix Node Type Peer-Peer

Re: Challenges with Wireless internet TOSHIBA, TECRA M5

Try opening network connections, right clicking on the wireless network connection and enabling it? -

also you say the switch is always on...double check that, Toshibas usually do have a switch, and it has two positions on OR off - just some preliminaries :)

Re: Challenges with Wireless internet TOSHIBA, TECRA M5

Yeah, that didn't seem to help any either.

I reset ip's
I uninstalled software
I deleted the hardware,
I reset the hardware
I did about 40 differentthings to it that was told to me in direct help search answers in Windows XP connection help.

I am using LINUX from the same laptop which told me on XP that the media was disconnected...funny that it works with Linux, but not windows XP which is what the laptop was loaded with.
