Internet Issues (vista)
Hey,
Ive had this problem for about a week now. I had two XP machines and one vista machine that could connect to the internet just fine. One day i came home and the vista machine could not connect to the internet. The router is obviously not the problem as two other XPs could connect. uTorrent and other p2p programs still work just fine, but the internet browsers (IE, firefox...) dont work. If i use the "nslookup" command and find the IP address of a website, i can enter that website by putting its IP in the address bar. Things ive tried: - System Restore to before the problem began - Checked the network adapter settings; they were fine - tried using an optional proxy supplied by my ISP; didnt work - turned off IPv6 and all the other unnecessary things. - turned off the ICS service i have a toshiba vista home premium x32... any help is appreciated thanks in advance |

Re: Internet Issues (vista)
Please supply the following info, exact make and models of the equipment please.
Make and model of the broadband modem. Make and model of the router. Connection type, wired or wireless. If wireless, encryption used, (none, WEP, WPA, or WPA2) Make/model of your computer. Also, please give an exact description of your problem symptoms, including the exact text of any error messages. On any problem computer, I'd also like to see this: Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt: Type the following command: IPCONFIG /ALL Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter. Paste the results in a message here. If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Make and model of the broadband modem - N/A
Make and model of the router - Speedtouch 585 v6 Connection type, wired or wireless - Both wired and wireless do not work; currently using wired. If wireless, encryption used, (none, WEP, WPA, or WPA2) - WEP Make/model of your computer - Toshiba A100-011 I have 2 XP machines and 1 vista that are all connected to a router. All computers could connect to the Internet just fine. About a week ago, the vista laptop could not connect properly. I would guess that the problem lies within the laptop and not the router as the other 2 XP computers can still connect. When I try opening a web page, the browser (IE and firefox) returns a Server Not Found error. If I use the nslookup command to find the IP address of a website, I can enter that website by typing the IP address in the adress bar, however, entering the actual website name does not work. P2P programs still work perfectly, but browsers, messengers and other apps (google earth, online games) do not work. I have tried the following: - Checked all settings in the ethernet interface; no problems there. - Turned off ICS service. - System restored to a date before the problem started; problem still there. - Turned off IPv6 - Spoke with ISP; they insisted the problem is within the computer itself. Re: Internet Issues (vista)
TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows Vista.
Start, Programs\Accessories and right click on Command Prompt, select "Run as Administrator" to open a command prompt. Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog Reset IPv4 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log Reset IPv6 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log Reboot the machine. See if that changes the symptoms.

Re: Internet Issues (vista)
Changes that may help to increase the compatibility of Vista with older networking devices:
Disable the IP Helper service: 1. Go to Start and type in "services.msc" (without the quotes) and press Enter 2. Scroll down to the IP Helper service, right click on it and select Properties 3. In the dropdown box that says "Automatic" or "Manual", set it to Disabled and then click on "Apply" 4. Then click on "Stop" to stop the service from running in the current session 5. Click OK to exit the dialog Disable the DHCP Broadcast Flag: Link: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/928233

Re: Internet Issues (vista)
Try these simple tests.
Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt: PING 216.109.112.135 PING yahoo.com Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter. Paste the results in a message here. If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here. Also, let's try replacing your DNS server. Follow the instructions at OpenDNS for Windows and configure to use OpenDNS for your DNS server. See if that makes a difference.

Re: Internet Issues (vista)
Obviously, you want to change the DNS on your computer, so that's the one to pick. Here's the link to the Vista instructions: https://www.opendns.com/start?device=windows-vista
