Wireless Bridging

Hi all.

Im using a DLINK DSL-G604T (router/modem/wireless) to connect to the internet, without any problems.

Just recently we decided to move one of the three computers in the house to a new room, which doesnt have cabling nor a wifi card, so we thought it might be possible to use a spare wireless router we had (Belkin G router - 2.4Ghz 802.11g) to bridge the two routers together, though we havent had any success.

I have tried serveral ways to make it work without success, im not sure how wireless bridging works. I have tried entering the MAC address of each router into the other but that doesnt seem to work either.

Here is a picture to illustrate what im trying to do. I want the BELKIN router to use the internet provided by the DLINK router.

Any information or ideas would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

Hey Raven,

This article explains how to do what you want to do, however, you must have a DD-WRT compatible router for it to work.

Hope this helps.

Re: Wireless Bridging

Thanks for that Jack.Sparrow, I have given that site a read over and am considering it. I'll just have to find out if my secondary router supports DD-WRT.

Though I will still be looking for other solutions that don't require me to flash the router, as I'm not experienced with flashing.

Thanks~

Re: Wireless Bridging

FWIW, I have a Belkin router with bridging and AP capability, and I could never get it to work properly. OTOH, my cheap ZyXEL P330W router configured and worked flawlessly in bridge mode. The Belkin says something about only working with other Belkin equipment in the manual, and I think they're right.

Re: Wireless Bridging

Ah, I didn't know it said that in the manual, thanks for that.

I looked into flashing it with DD-WRT but I could never get the timing right. Ahwell, guess I'll have to run some cable.

Thanks guys!

Re: Wireless Bridging

The cable will be a lot more trouble free, not to mention faster and more secure. FWIW, I use cable all over my place, and the wireless is restricted to the two laptops.
