Connectivity speed problems
Hi
I'm having problems connecting to the internet. At different times during the day the connection speed changes. Generally it is at it's fastest in the morning and is slower in the evening; at times it doesn't even connect at all. This problem is not caused by the computer being left on and connected to the internet all day as the internet is slow or doesn't connect even if the computer is only turned on in the evening. I use talk talk broadband and have checked the connection speeds using www.speedtest.net. The speed ranges from 1666kb/s in the morning to 161kb/s at night. Any help or ideas on what the problem may be will greatly help. Thanks. Rob |

It's just peak and off peak times,
In the morning less people are using the internet than in the evening, hence it it slower in the evening :) How ever you should still be able to connect? What speed connection are you SUPPOSED to be getting? :) |

Re: Connectivity speed problems
I understand that at peak times the internet slows down but it does this to such an extent that it won't even connect. I use Talk Talk internet which is supposed to be up to 8mb. Even when it does connect in the evenings it wil only go to one or two sites before failing. If I leave it to after peak times (late at night) it still fails in the same manner. Any ideas? Could this problem stem with the computer or is it likely to be the ISP?
Thanks |

Re: Connectivity speed problems
When the connection is really slow, please do this:
Register at DSLReports and run their line quality tests. Post a link to the results here.

Re: Connectivity speed problems
If you look at that line quality test, a major problem should be evident! You have major packet loss on the first hop, which is from your machine to the initial gateway in the ISP's network. That screams modem, interior wiring, or the ISP network.

Re: Connectivity speed problems
Thanks again for your reply. What do you recommend I do about this?
I've contacted the service provider and they are being very slow in helping me out at all. What so you mean by 'interior wiring'? Is this just all the wires and connections from the computer to the modem then phone line? I've tried cutting out all connections and plugging the phone line directly into a BT test socket but still get the same problem. Modem details: Talk Talk Modem - SmartAXMT882 ADSL Broadband modem Could the interior wiring and modem still be at fault if the problem is intermittant? Many thanks |

Re: Connectivity speed problems
I don't know what a BT test socket is, but how I test a DSL connection is connect directly to the service entrance with a short cable to the modem. You should also use DSL certified patch cables for the connection from the phone line to the modem.
Intermittent connections can be caused by poor wiring, bad or misplaced filters, or a flaky modem. My guess in looking at that display is, it's the ISP, but I'd eliminate any interior issues first. If it turns out to be the ISP, you have no choice but to deal with them, there's nothing we can do to affect that problem.
