Static and Dynamic IP Addresses On Same Network
I have a router at home, two laptops connect to it wirelessly and one desktop is connected through a USB cable. I was wondering, can I just set up a static IP on my laptop and leave the other ones as dynamic or would this just mess things up? And if so, how?

Re: Static and Dynamic IP Addresses On Same Network
There is no problem at all with static and dynamic IP addresses. Note that you need to make sure that the static IP addresses are assigned OUTSIDE the range of the DHCP server's address pool in the router, but still in the same subnet.
For instance, if the DHCP address pool is 192.168.1.2 to 192.168.1.100, you'd use addresses from 192.168.1.101 through 192.168.1.254 for your static IP devices.

Re: Static and Dynamic IP Addresses On Same Network
So then if I just want a static IP on my computer, I can leave the other computers alone and they won't have any problems even though we're connecting to the same network?

Re: Static and Dynamic IP Addresses On Same Network
That's correct. As long as you make sure the static IP address is not overlapping the DHCP server's address pool, they will be fine. Obviously, you have to specify the correct Default Gateway and DNS addresses, those should match the dynamic connections.
