Limited or no connectivity on one computer
Recently, one of my computers started giving this error, at first I thought it may have been the router, as it was old, and has been through hell, so I got a new switch a dynex DX-ESW5, same problem, thought maybe it was the network card, so I used another computer I am fixing in the same room, nothing, so finally I decided to see if it was the cord, bought a new one.. nothing.
I've tried doing a full network reset (shutting everything down, waiting a minute restarting it all), and various other things, now it comes up, when I enable the connection it takes like three minutes "acquiring network address" then comes up with limited or no connectivity Modem is a motorola SB5101, but that's most likely not the problem, I also replaced the modem when this all started, same problem. Forgot to mention, the computer i'm connecting on and posting on is working fine, and is on the same network, and all the connections are wired. and again, both computers on xp professional, my computer is hand built, the other computer is ancient as they come, and was given by a friend, have no idea on it's make or model, but it has a basic PCI network card. Re: Limited or no connectivity on one computer
Is the problem system set to obtain its IP via DHCP? check if it is in TCP/IP properties. If not set it to obtain IP automatically.
If it already is, you could try to get it working by writing down the IP,Subnet Mask,Default Gateway & Dns servers from the machine that works and entering those values manually, dont forget to change the last number on the IP address so that its unique. |

Re: Limited or no connectivity on one computer
You have a plain DOCSIS modem and an Ethernet switch. Most ISP's don't give multiple public IP addresses, so I'm not that surprised that you can only get one connections.
On the working and non-working computer, let's see this. Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt: Type the following command: IPCONFIG /ALL Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter. Paste the results in a message here. If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Re: Limited or no connectivity on one computer
I suspect your ISP tightened up the network node and noticed you had two public IP addresses. I also suspect that if you just connect the second computer without the first one, it'll suddenly connect fine. (remember to power cycle the modem).
You need a broadband router.

Re: Limited or no connectivity on one computer
Well that's the odd point we had a router before this, a DI-605E or some such, worked fine, then the problem started, we replaced it with the switch thinking it was the router, but we got a switch due to lack of cash on hand at the time,

Re: Limited or no connectivity on one computer
I'd dig that router back up, because I think it's probably still working. I'm almost certain that you don't have multiple public IP addresses, unless you're paying for them. It's an extra cost feature for any ISP that I'm aware of.
