Network IP address problem

I’ve just moved into a house with shared internet and as far as I know its all working fine…apart from the fact that I cannot seem to set up mine.
I am running the Virgin Broadband set-up CD and at the part where it tries to connect, its tells me that there is a Connection Error.
In the Local Area Connection at the bottom of the screen it keeps telling me that there is ‘‘limited or no or connectivity’’. I have tried to repair it but it then says that it cannot finish repairing because it cannot renew the IP address.
I’m using an Ethernet cable through the socket in the wall and the modem, etc, is linked to all of our individual rooms, and Im on Windows XP.

I’ve had a read through some of the forums, and like many I think I have issues with my DCHP, but do not understand how to ping.

If anyone has any ideas on how I could solve this problem that would be absolutely brilliant.

Thanks very much.

Re: Network IP address problem

First off, forget about the Virgin set-up CD! That will only cause you grief!

Since this is a shared connection, and it's wired, it should be reasonably simple to configure.

First, plug the cable in and boot the computer.

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows XP with SP2.

Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt:

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ip reset reset.log

Reboot the machine again.

Let's see this:

Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt:

Type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Re: Network IP address problem

Are you SURE the jack you're using is working? Have you plugged a working computer into it and connected? Have you plugged your computer into a known working jack?

Re: Network IP address problem

I tried my housemates laptop through the jack in my wall lastnight - it worked fine.

I also tried her cable with my PC to make sure that I don't have a faulty cable, but mine didnt work with that either.
-Again, it couldnt renew the IP address saying that there was limited or no connectivity.

Do you have any other ideas? Thanks v.much for you help.

Re: Network IP address problem

Well, the bad news is, it's coming down to either NIC drivers or a defective NIC I would think.

I'd uninstall the NIC in Device Manager, reboot and reload the drivers. If that fails, you may have to consider a PCMCIA NIC to get this machine connected.

Re: Network IP address problem

I uninstalled the NIC in the Device Manager (there is still another one to uninstall too) but do not know how to re-install it. Please could you advise?

Thanks very much.

Re: Network IP address problem

If you know the make / model of your NIC you should be able to find installation files / drivers from the manufacturers website.
