Some browsers work, some don't.

Hi, I'm not sure if this is a networking issue of a malware issue but I'm posting it here first.

I'm running on windows vista and I've always had two browsers, IE and Firefox. I mainly use firefox but once in a while i use IE for because some sites uses plugins that firefox can't do.

Anyways, a while back IE stopped connecting to the internet but Firefox still works. I'd open IE and it'd give me the

Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage

Most likely causes:
You are not connected to the Internet.
The website is encountering problems.
There might be a typing error in the address.

Firefox still worked fine so I didn't think much of it.

Yesterday, firefox did an update, restarted, and now has the same problem. Can't connect to the internet. I'm still connected to the internet so I asked a friend over MSN to download the Opera browser and send it to me. I'm using that to post this right now.

Now i'm worried that this problem will spread to Opera and any other browsers I install as well.

What are some possible causes to this problem and how would i solve it?

P.S. I'm connected directly to the modem, no router involved.
