WAP wont work on my vista notebook?

Ok so i am abit of a networking noob ill get that right out there..

Got a wired ADSL lan with a WAP hanging off the end of it so I can connect wirelessly to the intenet in the kitchen at home.

I have set my XP notebook up sweet az as have I with my GA MAC notebook.

I cant seem to get the hang of vista,I can get it to pick up the WAP but it wont go through the gateway.

When I ipconfig if doesnt list the gateway at all?
The router is set to DHCP and all the other devices are sweet az?
I can loop back ping fine but I cant ping out or ping the gateway?

Help... can I get an easy few options from you guys?

Oh sorry I meant to say I have a third notebook running visita which I cant get the hang of?

Please supply the following info, exact make and models of the equipment please.

Make and model of the broadband modem.
Make and model of the router.
Connection type, wired or wireless.
If wireless, encryption used, (none, WEP, WPA, or WPA2)
Make/model of your computer.
Version and patch level of Windows on all affected machines, i.e. XP-Home (or XP-Pro), SP2, Vista, etc.




Let's also see this when you're connected to the WAP with the Vista machine.

Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt:

Type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

The network is a wired LAN with a wireless access point hanging off one end of it so I can connect some notebooks at the other end of my house.

From the internet in it is as followes.

Adsl connection into a Dlink 502T wired router,which is connected to a 4 port Micronet SP250A hub which is wired,this has a PC hanging off it via ethernet and a printer which works fine.

From there is has a wired cable into a WAP Netgear WG602 wireless access point.
I can access the internet through this WAP with my G4 MAC powerbook sweet az,I can also access the internet via the WAP with my XP SP2 Laptop.

When I connect wireless to the WAP from my sony Vaio running Vista business version 6.0, it will see the wireless network and connect to this but it will not connect to the internet.

The WAP is open connection ie no wep,wpa etc, i have tried to flush the dns cache and to get it to renew ect but I have had no joy. I note that it doesnt list the gateway address on the ipconfig which is abit odd and I was thinking this may be the issue? I have not plated with Vista at all as the vista notebook is may Dad's and I am trying to connect him up to the network for awhile.

Changes that may help to increase the compatibility of Vista with older networking devices:



Disable the IP Helper service:

1. Go to Start and type in "services.msc" (without the quotes) and press Enter
2. Scroll down to the IP Helper service, right click on it and select Properties
3. In the dropdown box that says "Automatic" or "Manual", set it to Disabled and then click on "Apply"
4. Then click on "Stop" to stop the service from running in the current session
5. Click OK to exit the dialog



Disable IPv6:

1. Go to Start and type in "ncpa.cpl" (without the quotes) and press Enter
2. Right click on each network connection and select "Properties"
3. Remove the checkmark from the box next to "Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6)
4. Click OK to exit the dialog

NOTE: You should do this for each network connection.



Disable the DHCP Broadcast Flag:

1. Go to Start and type in "regedit" (without the quotes) and press Enter.
2. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces\{GUID}
In this registry path, click the (GUID) subkey that corresponds to the network adapter that is connected to the network.
3. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD (32-bit) Value.
4. In the New Value #1 box, type DhcpConnDisableBcastFlagToggle, and then press ENTER.
5. Right-click DhcpConnDisableBcastFlagToggle, and then click Modify.
6. In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK.
7. Close Registry Editor.

NOTE: You should do this for each and every GUID subkey.



The only program I'm aware of that currently relies on IPv6 is the new Windows Meeting Space. The first 2 changes will cause that program not to work - but will leave all of your normal (IPv4) connections unaffected. If it causes problems that you can't overcome, simply revert back to the original settings.

I will give that a go.

As another option would scrapping the wired network and just having a single wireless ADSL router with all of the devices connecting to wirelessly be another option?
I have a space wireless pci card for the desktop which is actually the only device currently wired to the existing LAN all the rest are wireless.

Would a later model router such as Dlink DI-524 4port Wireless Router,Linksys WRT54GC Wireless-G 4 port Wireless Router,Linksys WRT54G 4port Wireless Router or Dlink DI-624S 108Mbps Wireless Router be better?

I am just wondering if you could advise if a later model router without all of the other old school wired network stuff I did have may be a better option moving forward?

IMO, anytime you can use a wired connection, I suggest you use it. Wireless will never be as reliable, secure, or as fast as a wired connection.
