[SOLVED] Computers don't recognize each other over network
I was using a D-Link router & a Speedstream DSL modem & everything was working fine, but my ISP said I could trade the Speedstream in for a 2wire wireless modem & my bill would go down by $2/month.
I installed the thing and after a call to tech support, got the internet working on both my main computer & my htpc. I cannot, however, get either computer to recognize the other one. If I click on entire network in Win Explorer, each computer only lists itself. Both are using cables, not wireless. I also have a modded Xbox on the network so I can listen to tunes upstairs. I haven't tried that yet, but I can't picture it working. I ran the network wizard on both computers but that did nothing. I called tech support again, but they said that since the internet's working, they can't do anything since they're not trained & I should get a technician out here. I can't access the modem's activation page either. It just comes up with 'Page unavailable'. Both computers are running WinXP SP2. Any help would be appreciated. Edit: The Xbox can access the shares on the htpc. Last edited by Topher5000 : 10-13-2007 at 04:08 PM. |

Re: Computers don't recognize each other over network
so you have your modem connected to you dlink router, and both of your computers connected to your dlink router? or does the modem have a built in router and and switch to which you can connect both your computers directly too

Re: Computers don't recognize each other over network
have you tried setting up a shared folder on one and mapping it on the other with \\(computername)\(share name)
(make sure those are back slashes (button above enter)) computer name can be found by right clicking my computer and then clicking properties, then computer name tab (be sure to exclude the period at the end) share name can be found by right clicking the share folder then clicking properties, then clicking the shareing tab oh ya also try turning your firewalls off on your computers and restarting for good measure and see if it will let you brose the network then |

Re: Computers don't recognize each other over network
I turned off my firewall & tried mapping a network drive, and since using the browse button doesn't work, I typed in the address, but it says that the network share isn't found.
I'm wondering if the 2wire 2701HG-G modem/router's okay. I can't get to it by typing in the address in IE. It says that the webpage can't be displayed. Last edited by Topher5000 : 10-14-2007 at 12:01 AM. |

Re: Computers don't recognize each other over network
Open up IE and type in 192.168.1.254
It should get you to the 2WIRE User Interface Once you get there, on the top of the page click on Home Network and tell me if you see your devices in that list. -Andy |

Re: Computers don't recognize each other over network
I tried ipconfig & got 2 different numbers. One for the ethernet adapter local area connection & the other for the ppp adapter sympatico. Neither worked. I tried 192.168.1.254 & that didn't work either.
Is it okay to post the ip info here, or will that compromise my security somehow? |

Re: Computers don't recognize each other over network
of the information that was given to you. Just give us the IP Address that is given to you and give us your Default Gateway, both for the Ethernet adapter.
