/!\ Need urgent help with Networking (VISTA) ASAP

Hi there.
Infomation.
recently my younger Brother got a brand new Toshiba satellite laptop ($2000) it is running with Windows Vista.

We are using a D-Link DSL-G604T -Wireless. My Desktop Computer is connected Via cable to the Router, and i have set up a home Network, for me and my Brother.

What we have done.
When my Brother first connected to the network we had no problems at all he could use the internet and Lan me in Games, later on he updated his computer using the windows update, there were about 25 updates to be installed, once they had finished he restarted the laptop and when he tried to connect to the network again it did not show and he could not use the internet,

i tried everything in my knowledge to try and fix this but nothing worked.

first we rang up the Internet provider - Westnet (AU)
they told us that we had to ring up the D-link Company because they could not help us in that field, so i rang D-link and they said that we were Connected (ping test), but did not know what was wrong.
they told us to ring the Toshiba help and support.
so we did and after waiting 45minutes we finaly got someone to talk to us but as soon as i told them the problem they hung up

i told them

"the laptop was fine before the windows updates and now we cannot connect to the network anymore?"

so for my final solution i did a system restore back to before we updated the computer so for now my brother laptop is not up to date.

some help in this would be great.

(he can connect to the network now)
one main problem we have also is that when me and my brother are Versing each other in a Game (lan) after a while he gets disconnected in the game and this is VERY annoying because we like to play RTS and we can never finish our epic wars it also happens in other lan games too,
We need a solution to this problem! we dont know what it is we have all the windows sucurity turned off because there is no need for it now, and my desktop computer works completely fine Running VISTA
is there anything we should turn off that is hidden from GUI's that may be causing my brothers laptop to be disconnected during Gaming/Lan
