Re: Verizon DSL to Dell Connection
Hi John,
I have attached the login screen but there are 4 quick screens after I press connect. Just to fast to capture. I also ran the Windows Xp Network Diagnostic Test and it says I have Winsock Problem. I have attached those screens also. I bought a program called Network Magic to try and it doesn't see the Internet also. It tries to ping the router and doesn't see it. Hope this helps |

Re: Verizon DSL to Dell Connection
Well, that looks like some application is corrupting the WINSOCK.
Let's try this, and if it doesn't work, we're going to have to try to track down the offending application. TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows XP with SP2. Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt: Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ip reset reset.log Reboot the machine.

Re: Verizon DSL to Dell Connection
Hi John,
I did exactly what you requested and rerun the Diagnostic Connection and there were no change with the Winsock. I have attached a list of the applications from the Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel. Thanks |

Re: Verizon DSL to Dell Connection
You have a ton of stuff installed there!
I'm curious about the Windows Driver Package entries from Pure Networks. I think that's part of Network Magic, and that would be the first thing I'd uninstall. The errors indicate that some process is sticking their links into the LSP chain, and they're not working properly. This could well be those two drivers that are part of Network Magic. Also, run the two WINSOCK fix commands after the uninstall, reboot and see what happens.

Re: Verizon DSL to Dell Connection
John,
I just put Network Magic in yesterday but removed it. It didn't removed the PureNetworks so I removed both and went throught the whole "netsh" process and nothing changed. Half those programs I added, but the problem existing before. I found the winsock problem initially and went on the internet to learn about it and followed their recommendation which was the "resetting the catalog" It didn't fix it. My son didn't believe in maintaining his sytem like I did. When I ran Registry Mechanic the first time, it had 938 errors. Spyware Doctor found 22 high risk trogans. I'm not sure what he use for virus protection because he didn't like McAfee. I had VirusScan Online but it's not letting me download it, in this system because McAfee uses a Download Manager and it doesn't see the Net. Some of the programs I loaded were: Microsoft Office 2000 Professional Family TreeMaker 2005 Snagit Surething CD Micrografx Programs Adobe Reader 8.1 HP Scanner Driver HP 4100 Series Printer Driver Viewsonics Monitor Driver The problem existed before I loaded them. |

Re: Verizon DSL to Dell Connection
Well, I hate to say this, but I'm not a fan of stuff like Registry Mechanic. Too many times I've seen these types of utilities remove stuff that is necessary, and it's very difficult to recover some of the time. I suspect too much time has gone by to do a system restore to before the problem surfaced, right?
Some application that has an Internet network connection is corrupting the LSP chain, but I don't see much of a clue as to which one.

Re: Verizon DSL to Dell Connection
John,
This problem originated before I put anything in the system. Dell does not have a restore disk, just Xp plus drivers. My son is looking for the Xp numbers because the disk is useless without it. I removed all the extras applications he put in but the problem still exist. What I did that may help, I ran MSINFO32. Rather than paste the Adapters and Protocol in here because they are long, I put them in a TXT File. I understand, there should be only 10 protocol files and anything extra is applications. I have 16 but don't know what I should have. It may be a clue as to what I need to remove. Thanks |

Re: Verizon DSL to Dell Connection
The Dell computer should have a sticker on the side of the machine with the CD key. Is this the original Dell installation?

Re: Verizon DSL to Dell Connection
John,
It's a replacement CD so I have been told. I tried the number on the side just to check. It's a Xp Home Edition w/SP2 that is shipped with a PC. It's a legal copy because I have received updates and it gets verified. Did you see anything in the Protocol File that appears to be an application? |

John,
In reviewing the Network Protocol I found 12 protocols with the endings: Datagram 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8 Seqpacket 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8 They were all "MSAFD NetBIOS [\Device\NetBt......" One of these groups is an application or add on. I also ran a LSPFIX program that couldn't find any problems. It says normally when this happens, some application has over-written the winsock.dll and it should be reloaded. I guess I do that by reloading Xp? I keep plugging away trying to get it fixed. I'm learning alot. |

Re: Verizon DSL to Dell Connection
Note that the LSPFIX programs are normally for versions of Windows prior to XP-SP2, and may corrupt the registry of SP2 or Vista systems.

Re: Verizon DSL to Dell Connection
You didn't read my comment correctly.
Note that the LSPFIX programs are normally for versions of Windows prior to XP-SP2. SP2 made a host of changes to the WINSOCK and TCP/IP stack and the registry entries.

Re: Verizon DSL to Dell Connection
John,
I reloaded Xp SP2 last night. Problem still exist. It didn't like the BroadCom Board so I will remove the software and install the Linksys Wireless Board and software. There may be Xp Sp2 drivers for the board so I will check that first. I didn't relaize there was that much different between Xp and Xp SP2. I'll let you know what happens. Thanks |

Re: Verizon DSL to Dell Connection
The physical level drivers are the same for any version of XP, it's the WINSOCK and TCP/IP stack internals that have changed. They're above the physical protocol layer.

Re: Verizon DSL to Dell Connection
Hi John,
I was up in the Microsoft Technical Area looking for information on LSP Xp Sp2. It talked about changes and also how to look at what LSPs in the catalog like: "netsh winsock show catalog" I thought if I could find what is there I may be able to delete the program that is given me problems. I have attached the results. They don't mean much to me but you may understand what they are. Thanks |
