Sorry for the poor title.
FOOT NOTES: dhcp is causing probs on reboot, and i cant set a static ip. Ok, here are the details; when I restart my computer I have only LOCAL access. And im not even sure why it says local, because i cant even access the router. I usually have to unplug my router and hold the reset button, restoring all the factory default settings. and sometimes i have to do this a couple of times. This is becoming a real pain every day. Now, I believe i know what the problem is. I work from home, and must have a very steady connection. If DHCP is enabled, its more choppy than a river during a hurricane. But if i disable it, all of my connection problems go away. But im sure that the DHCP is the reason it keeps losing my computers, during my reboot. Because I have found that if i reboot comp#1 and leave comp#2 running, i lose the connection with #1, but i can still connect to my router config, and if i enable DHCP for a moment > renew the DHCP> Release DHCP> then on #1 "REPAIR NETWORK CONNECTION" in the network properties. It all goes away without having to do the whole "THROWING THE ROUTER AGAINST THE WALL ROUTINE." Now the simple answer for this would be to set a static ip, But guess what, I cant. I have tried it over 10 times on each computer, called my isp, goten the dns servers right. Whatever i do i cannot make the static ip work. I am running two PCs. One is less than a month old, and is a vista. And the second is about a year old with xp. The sytems are very clean and i have great antivirus/spyware software and have no other problems in general. On my xp machine, the other day, i had nothing else running and was trying to set my static ip and i got a blue screen. IM LIKE, "WHAT THE HEY?". I have a cable modem, from there i run to a Dlink Di524, then from there i patch to a netgear switch FS605, then i run cat 5 to each of my two computers. Im on A limited budget (reason for the wireless router), i dont need wireless, but i had bought the wireless because thats what i had used it for in the past. Im sure there is probably a simple answer, or maybe even somone can figure out what im doing wrong on my static ip settings, but im just burnt out on trying, that i dont even know where to begin anymore. This forum is my last resort before moving into a cave and growing a beard like chuck noris. Thanks in advance. |

Re: On restart, router forgets computers.
All these issues seem to revolve around the D-Link router. FWIW, I find the DI-524 to be a real piece of junk, and a major disappointment. I've used other D-Link products in the past, but my first step would be to replace that turkey! I have one in my closet that I refuse to even attempt to use.
Have you connected directly to the broadband modem without the router using standard DHCP assigned addresses? Maybe it's time to start eliminating components.

Re: On restart, router forgets computers.
Since DHCP works fine on when you connect to the modem, I can't see this being a DHCP issue. If you can connect each computer to the modem and get on-line, that would eliminate issues with the computers.
BTW, I'd like to see this when you're connected directly to the modem. Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt: Type the following command: IPCONFIG /ALL Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter. Paste the results in a message here. If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here. Also, we'll try one final set of solutions, then I'm out of ideas. Download the latest firmware for the router and install it. Use the following process to connect the router and test. If this doesn't do it, my advice would be to shop for a new router. Reset the router to factory defaults by holding the reset button down for 15 seconds with power on.
When the computer is completely booted, see if there is any change in behavior.
